[00:00] (0.16s)
Welcome to another episode of Out of
[00:01] (1.76s)
Spec, where I've got a little situation.
[00:03] (3.68s)
I came out to my car this morning. I'm
[00:06] (6.24s)
in the process of driving up to Mystic,
[00:08] (8.00s)
Connecticut right now, and my windshield
[00:10] (10.72s)
is cracked. I don't understand this. I
[00:13] (13.68s)
didn't I don't remember taking a direct
[00:16] (16.32s)
hit from a rock, but I just did drive
[00:18] (18.96s)
this vehicle down to uh Valley Forge,
[00:21] (21.52s)
Pennsylvania the other day, and it's
[00:23] (23.36s)
possible I took some road hit, but um
[00:25] (25.84s)
yeah. So anyway, what is the process for
[00:28] (28.64s)
me to have to get a new windshield? One
[00:30] (30.72s)
of the things that stinks is that I've
[00:32] (32.72s)
got the ceramic coating on the inside or
[00:35] (35.36s)
the ceramic um PPF, not PPF. What am I
[00:38] (38.72s)
talking about? You know, the ceramic
[00:40] (40.40s)
film to keep the heat down. It's it's
[00:43] (43.60s)
relatively clear on the front
[00:45] (45.36s)
windshield, but that's going to cost me
[00:47] (47.76s)
money. There's no way the insurance
[00:49] (49.12s)
company is going to uh is going to
[00:51] (51.12s)
figure that out. But the thing is that I
[00:54] (54.08s)
do have full glass coverage with my
[00:56] (56.48s)
insurance carrier. Um, but I'm not sure
[01:00] (60.16s)
this is like the Safe Flight. Is this
[01:02] (62.72s)
where Safe Light should do it or Tesla
[01:04] (64.48s)
should do it? I don't really know. Kyle
[01:06] (66.72s)
just had to replace the windshield in
[01:08] (68.32s)
his Model 3 performance as well, the
[01:10] (70.16s)
older model. He paid for it out of
[01:11] (71.92s)
pocket because you can't get full
[01:13] (73.52s)
coverage of glass in Colorado because of
[01:15] (75.84s)
all the hail out there. But I have it
[01:17] (77.92s)
here in Connecticut. So, I'm going to go
[01:20] (80.48s)
down this path. I need to call uh the
[01:22] (82.96s)
insurance company and I'm hoping that it
[01:25] (85.20s)
doesn't crack more on this trip. But uh
[01:28] (88.56s)
anyway, let's get into it. This is going
[01:30] (90.88s)
to be what do you do when you got a
[01:32] (92.88s)
cracked windshield and your Tesla, in
[01:35] (95.12s)
this case Model 3. Let's get into it.
[01:45] (105.52s)
Today I'm finally going to be able to
[01:47] (107.36s)
take my car in to Safelight Autoglass
[01:49] (109.92s)
and have the windshield replaced because
[01:52] (112.96s)
I don't know what happened, but it
[01:54] (114.80s)
cracked and that's not good. And the
[01:57] (117.12s)
crack's getting bigger. So, it took
[01:59] (119.60s)
about a week and a half for me to get an
[02:01] (121.28s)
appointment. And uh this is not one
[02:03] (123.68s)
where Safe Light can come out and fix
[02:05] (125.60s)
the the the windshield on in a remote
[02:08] (128.96s)
location because they have to do all the
[02:11] (131.12s)
camera calibrations and all of that. So,
[02:14] (134.00s)
luckily I've got full glass coverage on
[02:16] (136.96s)
this car. And yeah, I mean, we're going
[02:19] (139.92s)
to see what happens. But I don't really
[02:21] (141.68s)
have any idea why the windshield
[02:24] (144.16s)
cracked. I don't remember any kind of
[02:25] (145.92s)
impact. But I'm going to ask him over
[02:27] (147.60s)
there if the little small little thing
[02:29] (149.68s)
that I see maybe was an impact, but I
[02:33] (153.68s)
don't know. I've been seeing quite a few
[02:35] (155.44s)
Model 3s. Maybe it's just one of those
[02:37] (157.68s)
things, you know, when you look at
[02:38] (158.80s)
something and and you're going through
[02:40] (160.24s)
it, whether you're buying a new car and
[02:41] (161.68s)
you all of a sudden you see that same
[02:43] (163.04s)
car everywhere on the street. I don't
[02:44] (164.64s)
know what we call that, but I've noticed
[02:46] (166.88s)
a number of Model 3 windshields cracked.
[02:49] (169.44s)
Are you seeing this? Are you hearing
[02:50] (170.88s)
this? Kind of strange. You can see over
[02:56] (176.08s)
Well, maybe not see, but it's hard. It's
[02:57] (177.76s)
kind of hard to see. There you go. You
[02:59] (179.28s)
can kind of see that the crack goes all
[03:01] (181.84s)
the way down there and all the way up
[03:05] (185.28s)
over here. Now, it it looks like maybe
[03:08] (188.72s)
there was an impact right there or
[03:11] (191.60s)
there, but very little. And you can see
[03:14] (194.56s)
the crack goes all the way down
[03:19] (199.28s)
all the way down to there. So, it's it's
[03:22] (202.88s)
literally from from here all the way up
[03:26] (206.64s)
to to the B A-pillar. So, let's go get
[03:31] (211.20s)
this thing fixed. So, from the inside of
[03:33] (213.60s)
the car, you can see how big the crack
[03:35] (215.44s)
is. And one thing that's interesting is
[03:38] (218.56s)
from when I noticed it, I marked off
[03:41] (221.36s)
right about there where the crack sort
[03:45] (225.44s)
of went to. And since then, it's gone
[03:47] (227.36s)
down to there. So, about another I would
[03:51] (231.12s)
say another inch. So, the initial when I
[03:53] (233.92s)
noticed it just came out to the car um
[03:56] (236.56s)
one morning and I noticed it and I was
[03:58] (238.56s)
like, why why is my windshield cracked?
[04:00] (240.88s)
It doesn't appear as if anyone
[04:03] (243.36s)
physically damaged it and it doesn't
[04:05] (245.12s)
appear as if I hit on something. Now, I
[04:07] (247.44s)
do have ceramic tint. I've got 30% all
[04:10] (250.72s)
around the windows, but in the front I
[04:12] (252.88s)
did more of a clear. Um, but it is a
[04:15] (255.84s)
ceramic coat to keep the the heat down.
[04:18] (258.16s)
So, that's going to be an additional
[04:19] (259.44s)
cost to get that fixed. But, boy oh boy,
[04:21] (261.60s)
that is some crack. So, this is my 2024
[04:25] (265.36s)
Tesla Model 3 Performance in Quicksilver
[04:28] (268.08s)
with white interior and a cracked
[04:29] (269.84s)
windshield. And luckily for me, I've
[04:33] (273.84s)
gotten the good guys at Safelight that
[04:36] (276.40s)
are going to take care of me. And I've
[04:38] (278.48s)
got full glass coverage. So, I'll leave
[04:41] (281.12s)
it with them and I'll uh we'll come back
[04:44] (284.88s)
and hopefully it'll be fixed. All right.
[04:46] (286.96s)
So, here's the new glass windshield. And
[04:48] (288.64s)
you can see there's a an electrical
[04:50] (290.72s)
input right there.
[04:52] (292.64s)
that runs all the way up, I guess,
[04:55] (295.36s)
around the side to where the cameras are
[04:58] (298.96s)
housed over in there. This is not your
[05:01] (301.52s)
ordinary piece of glass here. This is a
[05:04] (304.64s)
very special piece and it's going to be
[05:08] (308.64s)
interesting to see how this
[05:12] (312.00s)
I'm sure they're going to do a great
[05:13] (313.20s)
job, but apparently that this is why
[05:14] (314.88s)
they need to have it in in the shop
[05:17] (317.12s)
here. Look at all those windshields. So,
[05:20] (320.40s)
one of the things that they have to do
[05:21] (321.76s)
with the Tesla windshields is after they
[05:24] (324.16s)
install the windshield and connect it
[05:25] (325.84s)
up, they have to connect the car to a
[05:27] (327.92s)
laptop that then um sits there and
[05:30] (330.80s)
calibrates the car. And what appears on
[05:33] (333.20s)
the screen is like a little steering
[05:34] (334.64s)
wheel and they have to there's a whole
[05:37] (337.28s)
process that they go through in order to
[05:39] (339.36s)
calibrate this this windshield. In fact,
[05:42] (342.32s)
they need to actually drive the car and
[05:45] (345.68s)
let the autopilot reset. And he said,
[05:48] (348.72s)
"You have to keep driving it and driving
[05:50] (350.24s)
it until it goes to 100%." And sometimes
[05:52] (352.64s)
they get stuck on 99% and then you got
[05:55] (355.44s)
to keep going. You just got to keep
[05:57] (357.28s)
driving it until it says 100%. And then
[06:00] (360.72s)
once it does, um, you know, then then
[06:03] (363.68s)
it's good and they can call me up and I
[06:05] (365.20s)
can walk over from my office, which is
[06:06] (366.80s)
just down the street to pick the car up.
[06:08] (368.80s)
But it's a uh special software that they
[06:11] (371.44s)
have the laptops here for. So these, you
[06:13] (373.84s)
know, if you get a cracked windshield on
[06:15] (375.60s)
your Tesla, it's you can't take that to
[06:17] (377.60s)
your average ordinary um, you know,
[06:20] (380.08s)
Tesla or I should say glass shop cuz
[06:22] (382.88s)
it's a little bit more sophisticated
[06:24] (384.24s)
than that. This is an approved glass
[06:26] (386.48s)
shop from Tesla and so that's why it's
[06:29] (389.44s)
all good to to take it here. So guys are
[06:32] (392.08s)
super friendly here in Stamford um on
[06:34] (394.88s)
Summer Street. And yeah, listen uh I'm
[06:37] (397.44s)
going to walk to work now and just let
[06:39] (399.12s)
them do their magic and it's uh goodbye
[06:42] (402.24s)
keeper. I know you're you're going in to
[06:45] (405.20s)
get fixed today. So let's uh let's let
[06:48] (408.64s)
them do their magic. Okay. Well, listen.
[06:50] (410.48s)
No issues with the windshield. It looks
[06:52] (412.00s)
really good. Um as you can see right
[06:54] (414.00s)
here, there's no more crack in the
[06:55] (415.84s)
windshield, which is great. What I do
[06:58] (418.08s)
need to do is test the autopilot.
[07:00] (420.40s)
although they said it did work. So, I'm
[07:02] (422.00s)
going to assume it does. You won't hear
[07:03] (423.12s)
from me again, unless it doesn't, in
[07:05] (425.44s)
which case that will be another video.
[07:07] (427.04s)
So, one thing that's interesting is the
[07:08] (428.64s)
total cost was actually only $1,14,
[07:12] (432.32s)
which I thought was pretty cheap.
[07:14] (434.00s)
There's no way that the uh parts
[07:17] (437.04s)
themselves are only uh $354.
[07:21] (441.28s)
I imagine Safelight has got some kind of
[07:24] (444.08s)
worked out deal with Tesla. I imagine if
[07:27] (447.04s)
you go to Tesla, I have full glass
[07:29] (449.28s)
coverage. So labor was over $600. But if
[07:31] (451.84s)
you were to go directly to Tesla, I
[07:34] (454.08s)
would guess this would be a lot more
[07:36] (456.16s)
money, especially if you're paying out
[07:37] (457.60s)
of pocket and you don't have full glass.
[07:39] (459.76s)
So in those states where maybe you can't
[07:41] (461.92s)
get full glass coverage, where you've
[07:44] (464.40s)
got bad hail, I don't know what to tell
[07:47] (467.04s)
you. But if you do have the ability to
[07:50] (470.24s)
put a rider onto your plan for full
[07:52] (472.64s)
glass insurance, I would recommend doing
[07:54] (474.88s)
that. And I'd also recommend looking at
[07:56] (476.72s)
the Tesla windshield replacement um
[08:00] (480.24s)
insurance. At the time of this
[08:02] (482.08s)
recording, the cost of Tesla's
[08:03] (483.92s)
windshield protection plan subscription
[08:06] (486.72s)
in the United States as of June 2025, it
[08:10] (490.08s)
varies by model. Um now, keep in mind
[08:12] (492.32s)
this is not part of your insurance that
[08:15] (495.76s)
you would have. Like for me, for
[08:17] (497.76s)
example, my nationwide insurance policy
[08:20] (500.96s)
is I I have a rider on there which is
[08:23] (503.60s)
full glass coverage where I have zero
[08:25] (505.44s)
deductible and I pay a premium for that
[08:27] (507.44s)
every single month. But you can get this
[08:30] (510.40s)
windshield protection plan subscription
[08:32] (512.80s)
for a Model 3 and a Model Y for 12 bucks
[08:34] (514.88s)
a month, a Model S 15, and a Model X 23.
[08:38] (518.24s)
That Model X windshield is insane, but
[08:41] (521.20s)
it's not available for the Cybert truck.
[08:44] (524.08s)
So, it includes unlimited repairs for
[08:46] (526.16s)
chips or minor cracks and one free
[08:48] (528.72s)
windshield replacement per year. So,
[08:51] (531.52s)
hopefully you only get one rock chip a
[08:53] (533.28s)
year. Additional replacements incur a
[08:55] (535.68s)
$100 deductible and owners must
[08:58] (538.08s)
subscribe within 30 days of delivery of
[09:00] (540.08s)
your car within 30 days of a paid
[09:03] (543.20s)
windshield replacement or after passing
[09:05] (545.92s)
a complimentary vehicle inspection
[09:08] (548.40s)
available starting in July this month.
[09:10] (550.64s)
So, enrollment is managed via the Tesla
[09:13] (553.12s)
app under upgrades, service plans,
[09:15] (555.36s)
windshield protection. One thing I do
[09:17] (557.52s)
want to point out is Safelight does a
[09:19] (559.20s)
great job of staying in touch. You can
[09:21] (561.60s)
see these different texts that I was
[09:23] (563.20s)
getting from them. You're on the books
[09:24] (564.88s)
for 7825.
[09:27] (567.04s)
Check out Safelight service details.
[09:29] (569.92s)
Kathy, well, the only reason it says
[09:31] (571.60s)
Kathy is because I think our insurance
[09:33] (573.04s)
is under her name. Um, your dropand go
[09:35] (575.60s)
service is coming up. Please reply
[09:38] (578.16s)
confirm. So, I replied, "Confirm." And
[09:40] (580.64s)
then they said, "Confirm. Be sure to
[09:42] (582.08s)
drop your vehicle off before 9:30 a.m.
[09:44] (584.24s)
on Summer Street, Stanford." Then the
[09:46] (586.56s)
day before the service was supposed to
[09:48] (588.80s)
happen, they gave me a reminder. Please
[09:50] (590.64s)
drop off your car before 9:30. And uh so
[09:53] (593.76s)
I did, you know, that was good to get
[09:55] (595.52s)
that as well. When they started the
[09:57] (597.52s)
service itself, they sent me a a text
[10:00] (600.08s)
saying, "Hey, listen. You've got your
[10:02] (602.08s)
services started. You're currently owe
[10:04] (604.00s)
$0 out of pocket. Finally, I got we've
[10:06] (606.16s)
completed the replacement for your 2024
[10:08] (608.32s)
wind, you know, uh Tesla Model 3, and
[10:10] (610.72s)
you can view your receipt right there.
[10:12] (612.88s)
Um, now what was interesting was that
[10:15] (615.52s)
was about, I don't know, maybe 1:00 in
[10:17] (617.68s)
the afternoon, and then at 6:40,
[10:20] (620.88s)
finally, it said I got a message saying
[10:23] (623.60s)
that the camera connected to your 2024
[10:26] (626.08s)
Tesla Model 3's windshield has been
[10:28] (628.64s)
successfully re-calibrated. Now, that
[10:31] (631.60s)
was weird because I I guess I'm I'm a
[10:35] (635.76s)
little confused about that because when
[10:37] (637.92s)
I was driving the car home, my autopilot
[10:40] (640.88s)
was working fine. My FSD was working
[10:42] (642.80s)
fine. So, maybe that was just a delayed
[10:44] (644.80s)
message. But the point here is that they
[10:47] (647.52s)
definitely stay in touch. And the woman
[10:50] (650.32s)
that checked me in over there, she's
[10:51] (651.92s)
like, "Oh, Mr. Connor, I guess maybe I
[10:53] (653.92s)
was the only Tesla that was scheduled
[10:55] (655.44s)
for the day." And it is a special
[10:56] (656.88s)
windshield. As bad as it is when you get
[10:59] (659.04s)
a cracked windshield, I will say this,
[11:01] (661.52s)
the guys at Safelight, they did me
[11:03] (663.44s)
Thanks again for watching another
[11:04] (664.48s)
episode of Out of Spec Dave. We'll catch
[11:06] (666.24s)
you on the next one. Bye-bye.
[11:09] (669.81s)
