[00:04] (4.40s)
Okay. Hi everyone. I'm Coach Angelique
[00:07] (7.12s)
and I'm so excited you're here. Today I
[00:09] (9.76s)
am going to be sharing why starting at a
[00:11] (11.92s)
California community college may just be
[00:14] (14.24s)
the smartest, most strategic first step
[00:17] (17.12s)
you can take for your future. Whether
[00:19] (19.92s)
you're looking to transfer to a top
[00:21] (21.92s)
university or jump into a great career
[00:24] (24.96s)
quickly, this session is for you.
[00:30] (30.80s)
Okay. So, I'm Angelique. Coach Angelique
[00:34] (34.00s)
is what most people call me with a T.
[00:36] (36.40s)
I've been in the education uh space for
[00:39] (39.12s)
over 10 years as a counselor, professor,
[00:42] (42.16s)
and instructional designer. I earned my
[00:44] (44.88s)
doctorate in uh from USC in educational
[00:47] (47.92s)
psychology and my master's in
[00:49] (49.92s)
counseling. I've supported hundreds of
[00:52] (52.40s)
students through transfer uh graduation
[00:55] (55.28s)
and career planning. And just personal
[00:57] (57.92s)
notes, I do love spending time with my
[00:59] (59.76s)
family, working on, you know, side
[01:01] (61.84s)
projects, learning new skills, learning
[01:06] (66.88s)
and coding, just special skills on my
[01:09] (69.20s)
own, and giving back through volunteer
[01:11] (71.60s)
and community work.
[01:15] (75.60s)
All right, so here's what we'll be
[01:17] (77.76s)
covering today. So, uh, we'll be
[01:20] (80.40s)
covering why community college is a
[01:22] (82.32s)
smart financial move, the kind of a
[01:25] (85.12s)
quick overview of the transfer pathways
[01:27] (87.68s)
unique to California, quick career
[01:30] (90.32s)
program options, some success stories,
[01:33] (93.92s)
um, and a checklist to help you plan
[01:36] (96.24s)
your 2-year journey. Okay. And just a
[01:39] (99.52s)
disclaimer, when it comes to our
[01:40] (100.80s)
stories, we do make sure that we don't
[01:43] (103.04s)
uh provide any um personal details. So
[01:45] (105.60s)
there is so it is pseudonyms and just um
[01:48] (108.24s)
some personal details have been shifted.
[01:50] (110.16s)
Okay. So let's go ahead and dive in.
[01:55] (115.68s)
All right. So think of community college
[01:59] (119.44s)
as a launchpad. Okay. It's flexible,
[02:02] (122.72s)
affordable, and designed to help
[02:04] (124.88s)
students transfer. Okay. Uh a couple
[02:07] (127.60s)
stats here. So about one in three UC
[02:12] (132.72s)
started at a California community
[02:14] (134.80s)
college and tuition. Um oftent times
[02:18] (138.32s)
we're seeing families save up to 30 uh
[02:21] (141.28s)
potentially 30% uh starting uh starting
[02:24] (144.88s)
at the community college with tuition
[02:27] (147.68s)
running about $1,400
[02:30] (150.80s)
um compared to the $14,000 that we see
[02:34] (154.40s)
at a UC. It's a great way to save
[02:37] (157.04s)
roughly $25,000
[02:39] (159.76s)
and get a head start um in your
[02:42] (162.08s)
curriculum.
[02:43] (163.92s)
Fantastic numbers, right?
[02:49] (169.44s)
So, some myth busting.
[02:52] (172.32s)
So, most of the time we hear students
[02:54] (174.56s)
and families refer to community college
[02:56] (176.96s)
as just a fall back or a safety option.
[03:00] (180.24s)
And we want to make sure that we bust
[03:02] (182.32s)
those myths because that's not true. Um,
[03:05] (185.36s)
the reality is there's many programs
[03:08] (188.00s)
offered in the community college space
[03:10] (190.00s)
that help students guarantee transfer
[03:12] (192.08s)
and also open up opportunities for
[03:14] (194.00s)
students that may not be completely sure
[03:15] (195.76s)
what goals they have for themselves.
[03:18] (198.32s)
Programs like the TAG program for the
[03:21] (201.04s)
UC's provide guarantee admissions to six
[03:24] (204.00s)
other UC's. Um, the ADT, so the
[03:26] (206.96s)
associates degree for transfer pathway
[03:29] (209.44s)
helps students transfer to universities
[03:31] (211.52s)
as well. um as well as honors to honors
[03:35] (215.36s)
programs which focus in on our top tier
[03:37] (217.60s)
universities like UCLA and Berkeley.
[03:41] (221.12s)
Um another myth that we hear is that
[03:43] (223.84s)
you'll fall behind your peers
[03:46] (226.72s)
and this is something that we don't want
[03:48] (228.80s)
you to worry about because participating
[03:50] (230.96s)
in some programs like mentioned um as
[03:54] (234.24s)
well as additional programming at the
[03:56] (236.16s)
community college that can help
[03:58] (238.16s)
guarantee that you stay on track with
[04:00] (240.64s)
support. um to get you to transfer to
[04:04] (244.72s)
those top spaces.
[04:12] (252.88s)
And so here are some pathways to
[04:15] (255.12s)
transfer. California leads the way in
[04:17] (257.84s)
the transfer system. There is, you know,
[04:21] (261.76s)
no doubt that the California education
[04:24] (264.24s)
curriculum is one of the strongest in
[04:26] (266.16s)
our nation. and um that trickled from
[04:29] (269.20s)
our wonderful UC's and top universities
[04:32] (272.88s)
all the way down to our community
[04:34] (274.56s)
college spaces. Okay, we lead the way
[04:37] (277.76s)
when it comes to transfer and also
[04:40] (280.16s)
become kind of a road map or a template
[04:42] (282.96s)
for many out ofstate transfer programs
[04:45] (285.68s)
as well. Okay, so one program I want to
[04:48] (288.72s)
highlight or a couple programs I want to
[04:50] (290.24s)
highlight is the UC TAG program. So, the
[04:54] (294.16s)
transfer admission guarantee provides a
[04:57] (297.28s)
guarantee um admission to six of the UC
[05:00] (300.88s)
campuses, which includes some of our
[05:03] (303.44s)
most popular uh UC's, so Davis, Irvine,
[05:07] (307.04s)
and Santa Barbara.
[05:09] (309.44s)
Um the guarantee does have some criteria
[05:13] (313.52s)
that you need to make sure you fulfill,
[05:15] (315.76s)
but it also ensures that you guarantee
[05:18] (318.72s)
um into particular majors as well as
[05:23] (323.12s)
guarantee your junior status once you
[05:25] (325.92s)
transfer. Going this route also helps
[05:28] (328.72s)
ensure that you get priority
[05:30] (330.48s)
consideration for housing, which is
[05:33] (333.28s)
something that we don't often think
[05:34] (334.64s)
about when we're in the transfer
[05:36] (336.00s)
process, but it's quite important and it
[05:38] (338.40s)
does often impact the success of our
[05:40] (340.80s)
students. Another program I want to
[05:43] (343.28s)
highlight is the CSU ADT program. The
[05:46] (346.56s)
associates degree for transfer
[05:48] (348.48s)
streamlines
[05:50] (350.00s)
um the 60 unit transfer guarantee to the
[05:54] (354.16s)
CSU Cal State system and that includes
[05:56] (356.40s)
the Cowpoly. So CowPoly Slow and Cowpoly
[05:59] (359.36s)
Pomona. This is a guarantee admission as
[06:02] (362.96s)
well into some um competitive programs
[06:05] (365.84s)
that are often challenging to get
[06:08] (368.40s)
accepted to. But one of the big boost
[06:11] (371.12s)
here is it actually offers a boost in
[06:13] (373.84s)
your GPA. So amazing if you're on that
[06:16] (376.56s)
cusp. It also guarantees your junior
[06:19] (379.36s)
status once you transfer. So with the
[06:21] (381.44s)
certification of your transcript and
[06:23] (383.52s)
this is something you would speak with
[06:24] (384.72s)
your community college counselor um in
[06:27] (387.44s)
admissions team to ensure that you
[06:30] (390.08s)
achieve and you also get priority
[06:32] (392.88s)
registration for classes once you enroll
[06:35] (395.36s)
there. And the last program I want to
[06:38] (398.24s)
highlight is the honors to honors
[06:40] (400.32s)
programs. And um this is really geared
[06:43] (403.20s)
towards our top universities like UCLA
[06:46] (406.32s)
provides priority admission as well as
[06:49] (409.04s)
additional um mentorships and guidance
[06:52] (412.00s)
into a successful transition. Okay. And
[06:55] (415.60s)
so as I'm talking about these pathways
[06:57] (417.68s)
to transfer um I'm going to refer to
[07:00] (420.48s)
assist.org or a couple times throughout
[07:02] (422.16s)
our presentation today, but it's a
[07:04] (424.80s)
really health helpful tool um to check
[07:08] (428.32s)
what classes, what courses actually
[07:10] (430.56s)
count before you enroll. And so it's
[07:14] (434.00s)
unique to California schools, but it's a
[07:16] (436.40s)
really really helpful tool um to ensure
[07:19] (439.04s)
that you're on track, especially in
[07:20] (440.80s)
between those meetings that you may be
[07:22] (442.40s)
having with your um advisors.
[07:31] (451.44s)
Okay. So, community college isn't just
[07:34] (454.32s)
for transfer. It's also a fast track to
[07:37] (457.36s)
the workforce. So, whether you're into
[07:40] (460.40s)
computer um computer uh opportunities
[07:43] (463.84s)
such as cyber security, digital media,
[07:47] (467.28s)
or you're going on the practicum based
[07:48] (468.96s)
like nursing, you can finish under two
[07:51] (471.68s)
years. especially for our high achieving
[07:54] (474.40s)
um high school students that are
[07:56] (476.08s)
enrolled uh like dual enrollment or have
[07:59] (479.44s)
strong AP scores and be job ready. It's
[08:03] (483.36s)
also a way for you to stack credentials
[08:06] (486.96s)
um that allow you to earn in your career
[08:10] (490.40s)
or in an entry-level career path while
[08:13] (493.04s)
you're learning and developing uh your
[08:15] (495.92s)
skill set into a bachelor's or beyond
[08:17] (497.92s)
degree.
[08:24] (504.48s)
So there are options especially in the
[08:27] (507.04s)
community college space. Not sure what
[08:29] (509.44s)
you want to do yet? Community college
[08:31] (511.44s)
lets you explore. And this is something
[08:34] (514.16s)
that we recommend to students especially
[08:37] (517.20s)
those that aren't too sure where they
[08:39] (519.04s)
want to start. And so uh STEM students
[08:42] (522.24s)
can start on an engineering uh computer
[08:45] (525.12s)
science biology health science path.
[08:48] (528.40s)
non- STEM students can explore uh
[08:51] (531.36s)
business and public service or arts and
[08:54] (534.24s)
humanities. And these are some examples
[08:57] (537.60s)
of kind of majors or tracks that are
[09:01] (541.36s)
commonly available at the community
[09:03] (543.44s)
college. The great thing about starting
[09:06] (546.16s)
at the community college is that is it
[09:08] (548.16s)
is flexible. It's a lowrisk way to
[09:11] (551.36s)
figure out what fits um your goals and
[09:15] (555.12s)
make sure that you are aligned in the
[09:17] (557.52s)
classes and you're able to be
[09:18] (558.88s)
successful.
[09:25] (565.04s)
Okay. So, we have some success stories
[09:27] (567.52s)
that we want to mention and so um we
[09:30] (570.88s)
have students Matteo. So, uh he started
[09:34] (574.88s)
as a high achieving high school student.
[09:37] (577.04s)
He was um part of dual enrollment at his
[09:40] (580.08s)
high school, which means that he was
[09:41] (581.68s)
taking classes at his local community
[09:43] (583.84s)
college or on campus with community
[09:45] (585.84s)
college instructors. Um he probably had
[09:48] (588.64s)
strong AP classes as well and got some
[09:51] (591.52s)
units there and before graduation from
[09:55] (595.36s)
high school was able to accumulate 15
[09:58] (598.24s)
units which is not bad especially when
[10:02] (602.00s)
you are um excelling in high school.
[10:06] (606.08s)
instead of going straight to university,
[10:08] (608.00s)
he actually decided to continue on the
[10:10] (610.64s)
community college track.
[10:13] (613.12s)
That allowed him to participate in a tag
[10:16] (616.40s)
program, which um he decided you can
[10:19] (619.36s)
only tag one university. So, he decided
[10:21] (621.68s)
to tag um UCR, so UC um Irvine,
[10:27] (627.92s)
and transfer in their computer science
[10:30] (630.00s)
program with a guaranteed junior
[10:31] (631.84s)
standing. And so, he did have to
[10:34] (634.08s)
maintain a 3.8 8 GPA but um based off
[10:37] (637.76s)
his history he was able to do it
[10:39] (639.52s)
successfully. While going through this
[10:41] (641.76s)
pathway he was also able to land an
[10:43] (643.92s)
internship which allowed him to graduate
[10:47] (647.04s)
debtfree.
[10:48] (648.64s)
So uh community college gave him options
[10:51] (651.84s)
and saved him and his family a lot of
[10:54] (654.40s)
money along the way.
[11:03] (663.12s)
next we have Jada. And so Jada's
[11:05] (665.84s)
experience is a little bit different.
[11:08] (668.00s)
Um, so she also started at the community
[11:10] (670.72s)
college after graduating, but she wasn't
[11:13] (673.52s)
sure what her path would be. And instead
[11:16] (676.72s)
of going straight to university and
[11:18] (678.96s)
testing out classes and accumulating
[11:21] (681.04s)
that student loan debt that we hear so
[11:23] (683.12s)
much about, um, she actually started
[11:25] (685.76s)
focusing in on passions she was
[11:27] (687.68s)
interested in. And so she enjoyed
[11:30] (690.72s)
digital media and enrolled in a
[11:33] (693.28s)
certification program that led her to
[11:36] (696.96s)
build a freelance business that allowed
[11:40] (700.32s)
her to explore her um options and also
[11:43] (703.76s)
build a clientele which then led her to
[11:46] (706.24s)
want to complete her bachelor's. And so
[11:49] (709.28s)
with um her previous experience, she was
[11:52] (712.32s)
able to participate the in the
[11:54] (714.32s)
associates degree for transfer, so the
[11:56] (716.72s)
ADT program and transfer to Cal State's
[11:59] (719.76s)
Long Beach.
[12:01] (721.84s)
Um go Beach. She combined creative work
[12:05] (725.76s)
with academic success, showing how
[12:08] (728.56s)
community college can fuel your passions
[12:11] (731.76s)
and future.
[12:14] (734.40s)
It's definitely a fun uh more creative
[12:16] (736.80s)
outlet, especially for students who
[12:18] (738.56s)
aren't too sure or students that are
[12:20] (740.80s)
exploring more of a design or artistic
[12:23] (743.76s)
um career path.
[12:35] (755.36s)
Okay. So, how to find the right path?
[12:38] (758.64s)
And so you want to start, if you haven't
[12:41] (761.76s)
already, start talking to your high
[12:43] (763.52s)
school counselor. Um, especially if you
[12:46] (766.80s)
have some, uh, community college
[12:49] (769.12s)
advisors available to you. I would start
[12:51] (771.60s)
talking to them early. A great way to
[12:53] (773.84s)
start for our high school students is to
[12:56] (776.16s)
take a dual enrollment class. This can
[12:58] (778.88s)
allow you um, exposure and exploration
[13:02] (782.08s)
to what is offered at your local
[13:03] (783.92s)
community college.
[13:06] (786.16s)
Um, you also will be able to get some
[13:08] (788.88s)
support in using the assist.org
[13:11] (791.92s)
um sites to track transferable courses
[13:16] (796.40s)
with the early um enrollment and
[13:18] (798.80s)
exploration. We would encourage you to
[13:21] (801.28s)
explore honors programs as they do open
[13:24] (804.48s)
a lot of doors and then that would lead
[13:27] (807.60s)
you to choose your transfer goal early.
[13:30] (810.56s)
So whether it's a tag, a tap or an ADT
[13:34] (814.40s)
pathway
[13:38] (818.24s)
and as I'm sharing this information, if
[13:40] (820.40s)
you're like this is a little bit
[13:41] (821.60s)
overwhelming, um our team is also very
[13:44] (824.48s)
much verse in these opportunities. So
[13:46] (826.48s)
they could definitely support you and
[13:48] (828.48s)
guide you to um some
[13:51] (831.84s)
alternative options alongside your um
[13:55] (835.52s)
university goals.
[14:01] (841.44s)
And so here we have a quick road map, a
[14:04] (844.48s)
two-year road map for transfer students
[14:07] (847.20s)
or transfer um
[14:09] (849.76s)
um exploration.
[14:11] (851.60s)
So if you want to stay on track, this is
[14:13] (853.60s)
where we would want to make sure that
[14:15] (855.12s)
you follow. Um and I say that loosely
[14:18] (858.08s)
because this is putting not putting into
[14:20] (860.16s)
consideration any dual enrollment
[14:22] (862.00s)
classes or AP coursework that you may
[14:24] (864.48s)
come into the community college with.
[14:26] (866.96s)
And so in your first in your first year,
[14:29] (869.92s)
you want to make sure you set your
[14:32] (872.32s)
transfer goal. Um that is probably the
[14:36] (876.24s)
biggest thing. Um because oftent times
[14:38] (878.64s)
if students don't have that goal kind of
[14:40] (880.88s)
identified or even just have um if you
[14:43] (883.92s)
have any inclination that you want to go
[14:46] (886.16s)
to university at some point, it will be
[14:49] (889.12s)
helpful to make sure that you identify
[14:51] (891.12s)
that goal early on. It's something that
[14:53] (893.92s)
does impact financial aid that you may
[14:56] (896.24s)
receive at the community college
[14:58] (898.96s)
as well as it will guide the counselor
[15:01] (901.92s)
in approving and removing prerequisites
[15:04] (904.80s)
for appropriate classes. So, you're not
[15:07] (907.28s)
just taking any class, you're making
[15:08] (908.96s)
sure that you're taking transferable
[15:10] (910.64s)
classes.
[15:12] (912.48s)
You want to also meet with a community
[15:15] (915.28s)
college counselor. And so while our
[15:17] (917.60s)
coaches are here to support you, the
[15:19] (919.76s)
biggest thing here is like we don't have
[15:21] (921.60s)
access to your courses at either your
[15:24] (924.48s)
high school or your community college.
[15:26] (926.80s)
So meeting with them early allows them
[15:29] (929.20s)
to come up with a comprehensive
[15:31] (931.44s)
educational plan that will lay out all
[15:34] (934.08s)
the courses you need to take. So when
[15:36] (936.00s)
planning um you're not planning for each
[15:38] (938.88s)
semester, but instead you have a full
[15:41] (941.28s)
map of all courses you need to take
[15:43] (943.28s)
while you're at the community college.
[15:45] (945.52s)
Um then we would also want you to join
[15:48] (948.40s)
any of the transfer honors programs. And
[15:51] (951.12s)
so with all this information, they would
[15:53] (953.68s)
be able to help you apply or um find out
[15:57] (957.68s)
what is the process of participating in
[15:59] (959.84s)
these groups.
[16:02] (962.24s)
Um and then we also want you to start
[16:04] (964.32s)
exploring internship opportunities in
[16:06] (966.88s)
that first year. Okay? And so it's a lot
[16:11] (971.28s)
going on in that first year. So you're
[16:13] (973.04s)
probably joining clubs. you're getting
[16:14] (974.72s)
used to the new environment. Community
[16:17] (977.12s)
college is such a diverse space and so
[16:19] (979.60s)
you have students of all learning
[16:21] (981.44s)
backgrounds. And so these are all things
[16:23] (983.44s)
you want to make sure you put into
[16:24] (984.96s)
consideration in that first transitional
[16:27] (987.04s)
year. In your second year that is um
[16:30] (990.96s)
similar to high school during that fall
[16:33] (993.76s)
semester, you are going to be applying
[16:36] (996.08s)
for TAG or ADT or TAP opportunities. So,
[16:40] (1000.24s)
it's going to be important that during
[16:41] (1001.92s)
fall you are keeping track of deadlines.
[16:46] (1006.16s)
You are also researching scholarship
[16:48] (1008.56s)
opportunities. And yes, even transfer
[16:51] (1011.76s)
community college students um can be
[16:54] (1014.56s)
recipients of scholarships. Many
[16:57] (1017.04s)
community college foundations also offer
[16:59] (1019.20s)
scholarships for their students. So, we
[17:00] (1020.88s)
want to make sure that you are exploring
[17:02] (1022.48s)
all opportunities available to you. And
[17:05] (1025.68s)
in that fall term, you want to make sure
[17:07] (1027.52s)
you finalize what schools you want to
[17:09] (1029.36s)
transfer to. Okay, some of the like
[17:12] (1032.16s)
specialized guarantee programs do have a
[17:14] (1034.64s)
limit of what schools you can identify.
[17:17] (1037.12s)
So, just keep that in mind and keep
[17:19] (1039.04s)
communication with transfer advisors
[17:22] (1042.08s)
available at the community college.
[17:25] (1045.20s)
In year two, um during the spring term,
[17:28] (1048.64s)
that's when you're going to want to make
[17:29] (1049.92s)
sure that you complete all the remaining
[17:32] (1052.32s)
requirements. So, think of year two as
[17:35] (1055.60s)
senior year. Um, you want to make sure
[17:38] (1058.64s)
you have all the 60 units completed by
[17:42] (1062.00s)
the end of the semester.
[17:44] (1064.56s)
That's also when you're going to be
[17:46] (1066.24s)
applying for financial aid at the
[17:48] (1068.08s)
transfer institution. And that's also
[17:50] (1070.56s)
when you're going to be applying for
[17:51] (1071.92s)
graduation at the community college.
[17:54] (1074.88s)
All really fun stuff.
[17:59] (1079.92s)
Okay. I also want to highlight some
[18:02] (1082.64s)
hidden perks of attending community
[18:04] (1084.72s)
college. And so there are so many
[18:06] (1086.96s)
benefits people don't often talk about.
[18:09] (1089.44s)
One being the smaller class sizes.
[18:12] (1092.80s)
Smaller class sizes mean that you have
[18:14] (1094.96s)
more support. You get more one-on-one
[18:17] (1097.92s)
time with professors and instructors and
[18:20] (1100.40s)
a lot of industry professionals. Um
[18:23] (1103.36s)
instead of being lost in those large
[18:25] (1105.68s)
lecture halls that we often see in
[18:27] (1107.52s)
freshman and sophomore classes. Uh you
[18:30] (1110.40s)
also have flexibility in scheduling and
[18:33] (1113.04s)
so a lot of community college um spaces
[18:36] (1116.32s)
do offer daytime, evening, hybrid, and
[18:40] (1120.16s)
online classes and even some weekend
[18:42] (1122.48s)
options. And so this is great for
[18:44] (1124.64s)
students who are working part-time,
[18:46] (1126.96s)
exploring other interests, or helping
[18:49] (1129.04s)
out at home. And um the last and
[18:53] (1133.44s)
definitely not the least benefit and
[18:55] (1135.52s)
perk offered is career services. And so
[18:59] (1139.04s)
you will have access to free career
[19:01] (1141.20s)
centers that you can come back to even
[19:03] (1143.36s)
after you transfer. Um they help with
[19:06] (1146.32s)
job placement. They also help with
[19:09] (1149.44s)
resume and interview support um in
[19:12] (1152.96s)
training and workshops
[19:15] (1155.36s)
and they also have an alumni connection
[19:18] (1158.32s)
and just connections within local
[19:20] (1160.00s)
businesses to help ensure that you find
[19:22] (1162.56s)
um opportunities while you're a current
[19:24] (1164.88s)
student and also after you transfer.
[19:29] (1169.76s)
I say all of these opportunities, but
[19:31] (1171.52s)
the biggest one is the lower debt, which
[19:34] (1174.80s)
gives you freedom to choose your next
[19:36] (1176.88s)
steps without financial stress. And so I
[19:40] (1180.24s)
think one of the biggest perks that we
[19:42] (1182.00s)
see at the community college is while it
[19:45] (1185.60s)
has such a a supportive and diverse
[19:48] (1188.32s)
environment, it also provides students
[19:50] (1190.96s)
and families the opportunity to explore
[19:54] (1194.16s)
um while staying on track without the
[19:56] (1196.16s)
financial burden.
[20:11] (1211.44s)
So I did see a question. I will jump to
[20:13] (1213.60s)
questions at the end.
[20:16] (1216.00s)
Um and so when we talk about the next
[20:19] (1219.76s)
steps, it's important also just to kind
[20:22] (1222.16s)
of highlight some of the return on
[20:24] (1224.08s)
investments. So, while we've mentioned
[20:26] (1226.72s)
that you can save uh on average $25,000
[20:32] (1232.80s)
before transferring to the university,
[20:35] (1235.28s)
many community college graduates also
[20:37] (1237.52s)
land highpaying jobs in um many
[20:40] (1240.24s)
industries that are in high demand like
[20:42] (1242.48s)
in technology. So whether you are hoping
[20:45] (1245.60s)
to transfer or you want to go straight
[20:47] (1247.60s)
into the workforce before identifying
[20:50] (1250.08s)
your your um your educational plans,
[20:54] (1254.40s)
you'll have a degree that does um
[20:57] (1257.44s)
validate your skill set. Okay. And so
[21:01] (1261.52s)
the next steps in the process, it's
[21:03] (1263.44s)
going to be important that you connect
[21:05] (1265.20s)
and visit your local community college
[21:07] (1267.04s)
if this is something you're interested
[21:08] (1268.40s)
in. You want to ensure that they have
[21:10] (1270.80s)
the programs you are interested in. So
[21:12] (1272.80s)
whether it is digital media, um cyber
[21:16] (1276.08s)
security or engineering, make sure that
[21:18] (1278.80s)
they have the resources available to
[21:20] (1280.64s)
you. Um and that also means any type of
[21:24] (1284.08s)
supportive environment. So tutoring, uh
[21:27] (1287.04s)
mentoring, things like that. Meet with a
[21:30] (1290.16s)
transfer counselor sooner rather than
[21:32] (1292.16s)
later. And so whether you're connecting
[21:34] (1294.08s)
with one of our coaches, connecting with
[21:36] (1296.40s)
your high school counselor, or going
[21:37] (1297.92s)
straight to the community college, start
[21:39] (1299.84s)
a dialogue early so that you can ensure
[21:41] (1301.84s)
that you have the right resources and
[21:44] (1304.00s)
materials to make an informed decision.
[21:47] (1307.04s)
And last is explore transfer resources.
[21:50] (1310.16s)
So I've mentioned quite a few times
[21:52] (1312.00s)
assist.org and I'm going to mention it
[21:54] (1314.96s)
one last time. Utilize the resource to
[21:57] (1317.68s)
rearch uh research uh what classes you
[22:00] (1320.72s)
should be taking at the community
[22:01] (1321.92s)
college and what um equivalent course is
[22:04] (1324.80s)
at your um ideal or your uh top choice
[22:08] (1328.56s)
university.
[22:13] (1333.20s)
Oops. And key takeaways here.
[22:18] (1338.00s)
Community college can save you money.
[22:20] (1340.88s)
That's something that we want to make
[22:22] (1342.72s)
sure we keep in mind in this whole
[22:24] (1344.56s)
process. A lot of these resources are
[22:26] (1346.88s)
also going to be available for dual
[22:28] (1348.56s)
enrollment students. Not necessarily the
[22:31] (1351.04s)
transfer guarantees, but that's saving
[22:33] (1353.76s)
on coursework because of the transfer
[22:36] (1356.64s)
ability. You can transfer directly to
[22:39] (1359.68s)
top universities from um community
[22:42] (1362.56s)
college participation in pathways like
[22:45] (1365.12s)
TAG, TAP, ADT, and honors programs.
[22:49] (1369.28s)
Um there are career ready programs that
[22:52] (1372.96s)
pay off fast. So like I said, we see
[22:55] (1375.44s)
many students successfully uh achieve
[22:58] (1378.96s)
their uh certificates and go into the
[23:02] (1382.40s)
workforce
[23:04] (1384.08s)
and there's also real success. So 30% of
[23:07] (1387.20s)
UC grads started at community college.
[23:10] (1390.32s)
And so it's important to keep in mind
[23:12] (1392.72s)
community college is a launchpad and not
[23:16] (1396.72s)
just a fallback plan. Okay? Let's make
[23:19] (1399.68s)
sure we're strategic, especially in the
[23:22] (1402.72s)
changing climate in the financial space
[23:24] (1404.64s)
of schools.
[23:26] (1406.80s)
Okay. And so I'm gonna open up to
[23:29] (1409.60s)
questions. I did see a question. Um, how
[23:33] (1413.84s)
does the quality of instructors compare
[23:36] (1416.08s)
on average between community college and
[23:38] (1418.08s)
the first two years at the UC? And so
[23:41] (1421.76s)
there was a follow-up on here. I heard
[23:44] (1424.00s)
many times UC's have uh TAs teaching
[23:47] (1427.36s)
courses during the first two years and
[23:49] (1429.68s)
they may not be as good. And you're
[23:51] (1431.68s)
absolutely right when we're looking at
[23:53] (1433.04s)
the UC space. The UC system has so many
[23:56] (1436.80s)
students and often the first two years
[23:59] (1439.44s)
especially that first year freshman year
[24:01] (1441.44s)
a lot of lecture halls have one a lot of
[24:04] (1444.48s)
sections and nearly 100 plus students
[24:07] (1447.44s)
enrolled and oftent time those first two
[24:10] (1450.32s)
years are um taught by TAs or graduate
[24:13] (1453.44s)
students and so they're still under the
[24:15] (1455.84s)
supervision and guidance of the full
[24:18] (1458.00s)
tenure professor but that one-on-one
[24:20] (1460.64s)
connection with that professor is often
[24:22] (1462.80s)
limited And so, um, when it comes to the
[24:26] (1466.40s)
community college, what we often see is
[24:29] (1469.36s)
you have instructors who teach at
[24:32] (1472.00s)
universities, um, top universities,
[24:34] (1474.48s)
UC's, private schools. Um, I think of
[24:38] (1478.48s)
many of my colleagues in the past being
[24:41] (1481.04s)
full professors at USC,
[24:43] (1483.68s)
um, UCLA and teaching at the community
[24:47] (1487.04s)
college for a variety of reasons. And
[24:49] (1489.28s)
so, you do get the quality of
[24:50] (1490.88s)
instructor. An added bonus is oftentime
[24:55] (1495.44s)
space because research isn't required of
[24:58] (1498.24s)
their faculty, you have a lot of career
[25:01] (1501.20s)
professionals with real hands-on
[25:03] (1503.68s)
experience. And that's sometimes
[25:06] (1506.00s)
different than at the UC space because
[25:08] (1508.16s)
often at the UC space we see professors
[25:10] (1510.80s)
with amazing research background but not
[25:14] (1514.08s)
often um the equivalent career
[25:17] (1517.44s)
experience.
[25:20] (1520.00s)
Great question. Any
[25:24] (1524.80s)
other questions?
[25:33] (1533.60s)
And you can go ahead and add them to the
[25:35] (1535.68s)
chat as well.
[25:52] (1552.88s)
All right. So,
[25:55] (1555.12s)
with that, it's been amazing um speaking
[25:58] (1558.40s)
with all of y'all and sharing some
[26:01] (1561.12s)
amazing resources that I also want to
[26:04] (1564.16s)
really highlight our Eagle Lock services
[26:06] (1566.16s)
as well. And so if you have any
[26:08] (1568.64s)
financial aid questions or you want to
[26:11] (1571.84s)
speak with some of our financial aid
[26:13] (1573.84s)
experts, Coach David is available to
[26:16] (1576.72s)
help guide and support you on your
[26:19] (1579.04s)
options when it comes to financial aid
[26:21] (1581.12s)
regardless of your financial situation.
[26:23] (1583.84s)
And so you would just go ahead and scan
[26:25] (1585.92s)
the QR code on the screen and you can go
[26:28] (1588.56s)
ahead and schedule some time with Coach
[26:31] (1591.28s)
David.
[26:36] (1596.24s)
And lastly, I've mentioned throughout
[26:38] (1598.56s)
the call today um meeting with our
[26:41] (1601.76s)
amazing coaching team at Eagle. And so
[26:44] (1604.88s)
if you are interested in learning more
[26:46] (1606.64s)
how we can support you um and your
[26:49] (1609.12s)
student journey, you can go ahead and
[26:51] (1611.44s)
book a 15minute assessment with one of
[26:54] (1614.32s)
our advisors by texting book
[26:58] (1618.56s)
at uh the phone number on the screen.
[27:09] (1629.52s)
And I will keep it up for another
[27:11] (1631.20s)
minute.
[27:47] (1667.60s)
And thank you so much everybody for
[27:49] (1669.92s)
joining me today in our conversation
[27:52] (1672.32s)
about community college and all of the
[27:54] (1674.48s)
wonderful benefits and perks offered to
[27:57] (1677.44s)
you. Um, my name again is coach
[28:00] (1680.08s)
Angelique or Dr. Angelique and I look
[28:02] (1682.96s)
forward to hearing from you and your
[28:05] (1685.04s)
students um and being part of your
[28:08] (1688.08s)
success journey. Have a great evening
[28:10] (1690.72s)
everybody.
[28:21] (1701.68s)
Awesome. Thank you
