[00:02] (2.48s)
Welcome, welcome, welcome everybody.
[00:04] (4.40s)
This is Coach Art uh and welcome to
[00:07] (7.04s)
Eagle. Thank you so much for joining me
[00:09] (9.52s)
tonight. Uh I am so appreciative um for
[00:13] (13.04s)
you joining me here tonight. Uh and as
[00:15] (15.52s)
we know, we're doing our weekly
[00:17] (17.36s)
training. Tonight I am going to um
[00:21] (21.44s)
provide you with the ins and outs of
[00:24] (24.32s)
scholarship searching. Okay, I guess
[00:26] (26.96s)
let's say the inside track on on winning
[00:29] (29.44s)
fast even during the summertime for
[00:31] (31.92s)
scholarships. Uh again, thank you so
[00:34] (34.40s)
much for joining me. Uh I do want to
[00:36] (36.56s)
introduce myself for those who don't
[00:38] (38.64s)
know me. Um I am coach Art with Eagle. I
[00:41] (41.84s)
am the uh head of coaching and chief
[00:43] (43.60s)
product officer here at Eagle. Uh I have
[00:47] (47.20s)
been uh with Eagle for about four years,
[00:49] (49.60s)
been in the college admission space for
[00:52] (52.48s)
over eight years, was in technology for
[00:55] (55.12s)
30 years, but my biggest claim to fame
[00:57] (57.68s)
is my the three boys. I'm so very very
[01:00] (60.24s)
proud of them. My oldest graduated a
[01:02] (62.48s)
couple years ago from uh UC Berkeley
[01:04] (64.64s)
with a mechanical engineering degree. Uh
[01:07] (67.12s)
my young my middle son, he is going to
[01:09] (69.52s)
University of Illinois in Chicago and
[01:11] (71.04s)
he's doing his nursing degree. and my
[01:13] (73.92s)
youngest is uh at Biola University and
[01:17] (77.12s)
he is um getting his physical therapy
[01:19] (79.60s)
degree and also playing college soccer.
[01:22] (82.24s)
So for all you parents out there, I know
[01:24] (84.72s)
where you're coming from. I know the
[01:26] (86.32s)
feeling of how it is uh to not only have
[01:29] (89.60s)
students going to college or or applying
[01:32] (92.24s)
for college, but how it is to actually
[01:34] (94.40s)
be in college and even graduating. So uh
[01:36] (96.88s)
welcome to everybody. I appreciate you
[01:39] (99.28s)
being here. Um, if you can see my
[01:42] (102.16s)
screen, can you please give me a uh
[01:45] (105.36s)
thumbs up if you can see my screen? Uh,
[01:48] (108.24s)
greatly appreciate it so that I know.
[01:51] (111.04s)
All right, so uh welcome, welcome. You
[01:53] (113.76s)
know, today's training is all about
[01:55] (115.92s)
unlocking strategies to find and win
[01:59] (119.20s)
scholarships. Okay, so trying to get
[02:01] (121.60s)
them quickly and effectively and even
[02:03] (123.84s)
with the essays that you have already
[02:06] (126.00s)
written. So whether you're starting from
[02:08] (128.40s)
scratch or you're just looking to boost
[02:11] (131.04s)
your chances, this is really a session
[02:12] (132.96s)
that gives you those those kind of
[02:15] (135.04s)
insider tips to make a real difference.
[02:17] (137.52s)
Now, what we're going to cover today is
[02:21] (141.44s)
um scholarship searching 101. So I'm
[02:23] (143.52s)
just going to give you the basics. Uh
[02:25] (145.44s)
I've given this talk before with respect
[02:28] (148.00s)
to the basics, but it's still important
[02:30] (150.32s)
for you guys to kind of understand how
[02:32] (152.48s)
do you get started with looking for
[02:34] (154.72s)
scholarships. going to give you some
[02:36] (156.48s)
resources, some some cool resources out
[02:38] (158.72s)
there. Uh also, uh where we can find
[02:41] (161.68s)
some niche and and custom scholarships.
[02:44] (164.56s)
Uh give you some advice on how to
[02:46] (166.56s)
repurpose your essays, you know, uh that
[02:48] (168.80s)
you've already written. Uh give you just
[02:51] (171.12s)
this really brief uh concept called
[02:53] (173.28s)
weekend workflows that helps you win
[02:55] (175.20s)
awards. Talk about some myths and
[02:57] (177.44s)
mistakes and things that no one really
[02:59] (179.44s)
tells you about. And then we'll finish
[03:00] (180.72s)
it off with takeaways. and then also
[03:02] (182.56s)
we'll have some um uh Q&A at the end.
[03:05] (185.52s)
Okay, so why don't we go ahead and get
[03:08] (188.00s)
started? So, first of all, scholarship
[03:10] (190.00s)
search 101. Um I love scholarships. Uh
[03:14] (194.40s)
and the reason why is because I hate
[03:16] (196.96s)
paying for education. I frankly think
[03:19] (199.76s)
that education should be free. And so,
[03:22] (202.72s)
uh I hope that everyone out there,
[03:24] (204.64s)
especially the parents that are
[03:25] (205.84s)
listening, uh do agree with me. Uh it's
[03:28] (208.64s)
funny how um you know a lot of students
[03:31] (211.44s)
sometimes don't have the concept of how
[03:33] (213.28s)
much it costs uh and and you know
[03:35] (215.76s)
education is so very expensive now these
[03:38] (218.40s)
days. And so anything that we can do
[03:40] (220.80s)
right to find um uh some funds that will
[03:45] (225.20s)
help offset the cost of of scholarships
[03:48] (228.24s)
or to offset the cost of of colleges and
[03:50] (230.64s)
the college uh expenses uh is always
[03:53] (233.60s)
always welcome. At least it is for me.
[03:56] (236.24s)
So, first of all, when you're starting
[03:58] (238.72s)
with scholarships, it is vitally
[04:01] (241.04s)
important that you know is that
[04:03] (243.44s)
scholarship searching can start very
[04:06] (246.08s)
well in advance. Frankly, you can start
[04:08] (248.00s)
as early as fourth grade. Normally,
[04:10] (250.64s)
organizations what they will do is they
[04:13] (253.04s)
will hold that scholarship for the
[04:14] (254.88s)
awardee until they get to the college.
[04:17] (257.44s)
So, that's not a problem. They will hold
[04:19] (259.12s)
it for you. Um so that's the reason why
[04:21] (261.76s)
um starting in fourth grade and and
[04:23] (263.52s)
doing the the the little um the you know
[04:26] (266.40s)
the little essays and the little
[04:27] (267.92s)
contests or so those can definitely uh
[04:30] (270.56s)
help. Okay. The best time typically for
[04:33] (273.28s)
finding scholarships is between fall to
[04:35] (275.36s)
spring. Okay. And the reason why is
[04:37] (277.60s)
because a lot of times um those who are
[04:40] (280.40s)
providing these scholarships like to
[04:42] (282.24s)
kind of uh coincide them when they do
[04:44] (284.88s)
award them with those that um when the
[04:47] (287.92s)
students are getting accepted um to
[04:50] (290.56s)
colleges you know sometime in April or
[04:52] (292.40s)
so and so it's kind of like the same
[04:54] (294.24s)
time they they say hey look at all these
[04:56] (296.24s)
amazing scholarships and look at the
[04:58] (298.08s)
students that are going to be attending
[04:59] (299.36s)
these schools. But I will say is that
[05:04] (304.32s)
scholarship searching is a yearround
[05:06] (306.56s)
event. Okay? And you need to make sure
[05:08] (308.40s)
that you make it a habit. Okay? I can't
[05:11] (311.84s)
say this enough. Students and sometimes
[05:14] (314.48s)
parents will also say, "Oh, okay. Um
[05:16] (316.80s)
it's just um and I'll do it a couple
[05:18] (318.64s)
months here and then that's it." And
[05:20] (320.40s)
they stop. Well, that's the mistake.
[05:23] (323.92s)
People make that mistake. If you make it
[05:25] (325.76s)
a habit and you make it a continuous
[05:27] (327.84s)
habit that every month you are looking
[05:30] (330.32s)
for scholarships and applying for them,
[05:32] (332.48s)
eventually you get really good at it,
[05:34] (334.40s)
frankly. And secondarily, you will find
[05:37] (337.76s)
you will you will um kind of open up the
[05:40] (340.88s)
the the Pandora's box with respect to
[05:43] (343.28s)
scholarships that are available. Okay.
[05:45] (345.68s)
Uh it always seems and I I know I've
[05:47] (347.68s)
experienced this. It always seems that
[05:48] (348.88s)
when you when you keep on going and you
[05:50] (350.88s)
keep on being persistent that things
[05:53] (353.04s)
just start opening up and especially you
[05:55] (355.28s)
also have this formula database which
[05:57] (357.36s)
we'll talk about now
[05:59] (359.84s)
if you're still working on your FAFSA.
[06:01] (361.76s)
Again a lot of stu a lot of people are
[06:03] (363.68s)
working still on their FAFSA. Um FAFSA
[06:06] (366.48s)
again it's it's just been gosh a total
[06:08] (368.96s)
nightmare. But uh remember FAA is for uh
[06:12] (372.40s)
federal aid but it's also because you
[06:14] (374.56s)
have to establish um the the facility at
[06:17] (377.92s)
the colleges that will take you know the
[06:21] (381.04s)
scholarships that you find. So it's very
[06:23] (383.76s)
very important that if when I'm talking
[06:26] (386.40s)
about scholarships today I'm talking
[06:27] (387.76s)
about the private scholarships the
[06:29] (389.20s)
scholarships that are not related to
[06:30] (390.72s)
federal to federal funding. be aware
[06:33] (393.84s)
that if your scholarship, okay, is not a
[06:37] (397.04s)
renewable scholarship that it could it
[06:39] (399.76s)
could cut into that, you know, awardee
[06:42] (402.16s)
of of uh financial or federal aid. So,
[06:45] (405.52s)
for example, if if you qualify and they
[06:47] (407.84s)
give you a $20,000
[06:50] (410.16s)
um financial aid package or so, if you
[06:53] (413.12s)
get, let's say, uh you know, um a
[06:56] (416.72s)
$5,000, okay, a $5,000 uh private
[07:00] (420.56s)
scholarship, then your federal um
[07:03] (423.28s)
scholarships can be reduced to 15. But
[07:06] (426.08s)
that's not a problem if you get
[07:07] (427.84s)
renewable scholarships or you're
[07:09] (429.60s)
continually looking for scholarships um
[07:11] (431.84s)
because you can make that up. Okay. Now
[07:14] (434.72s)
the next thing is uh and here's here is
[07:17] (437.12s)
the secret sauce. Okay, so this is
[07:19] (439.36s)
something that I have taught for so many
[07:22] (442.56s)
years and uh people still don't believe
[07:25] (445.44s)
me until they actually do it. Um and
[07:27] (447.68s)
then what happens here is that uh they
[07:30] (450.08s)
become experts. Okay. So here is how you
[07:33] (453.28s)
search. First of all, you the student
[07:37] (457.20s)
and the parents can help in this. You
[07:39] (459.92s)
will find keywords that are related to
[07:42] (462.72s)
you. Your achievements, your
[07:44] (464.96s)
involvement, your service, your
[07:46] (466.80s)
leadership, your talents, your
[07:48] (468.24s)
backgrounds, everything that is
[07:50] (470.24s)
associated and related to you. Um your
[07:52] (472.96s)
ethnicity, um your um your specific, you
[07:56] (476.80s)
know, things that describe you. What you
[07:59] (479.36s)
want to do is you want to go ahead and
[08:01] (481.52s)
create a list of those. So, for example,
[08:05] (485.76s)
you know, I do this one with surfing,
[08:07] (487.76s)
okay? where maybe you are a surfer.
[08:10] (490.56s)
Okay. So, what you're going to do is is
[08:13] (493.12s)
that you're going to go ahead and take a
[08:15] (495.36s)
those keywords and you're going to
[08:17] (497.36s)
expand on them. You frankly, if you get
[08:19] (499.76s)
10 of those, you um then you want to do
[08:22] (502.80s)
is you want to expand by taking
[08:24] (504.80s)
variations of that. So for example, if
[08:26] (506.72s)
you do surfing, then you do water
[08:29] (509.44s)
sports, body surfing, surfboard, ocean,
[08:33] (513.60s)
everything that is related to surfing,
[08:36] (516.16s)
you want to go ahead and start variating
[08:38] (518.16s)
on it, okay? And making different
[08:40] (520.16s)
keywords.
[08:41] (521.68s)
And then what you're going to do with
[08:42] (522.80s)
those keywords, now what I want you to
[08:44] (524.48s)
do is I want you to log these. And
[08:46] (526.40s)
frankly, you should come up for with
[08:48] (528.40s)
about a hundred um key words, okay, that
[08:51] (531.84s)
you can use because if you think about
[08:53] (533.92s)
it, even the smallest little thing,
[08:55] (535.60s)
let's say you're a juggler or let's say
[08:58] (538.08s)
you love to sleep. I don't care what it
[09:00] (540.64s)
is, you know, uh you love bananas, okay?
[09:03] (543.76s)
You just go ahead and everything that's
[09:05] (545.44s)
about you, you want to use it as a
[09:07] (547.60s)
keyword. Then you go into your browser,
[09:09] (549.84s)
okay? So, let's say your Google search
[09:11] (551.44s)
or whatever you use as your browser and
[09:13] (553.52s)
you type in that keyword. So, let's say
[09:15] (555.36s)
it's surfing. And then after that, you
[09:17] (557.92s)
put surfing grant, surfing scholarship,
[09:21] (561.52s)
surfing award. Okay? So, you're going to
[09:24] (564.72s)
type that into your browser. And there's
[09:27] (567.36s)
going to be a list of things that come
[09:29] (569.44s)
up. All right? So, what you want to do
[09:32] (572.00s)
now is you want to start research. You
[09:33] (573.36s)
want to start clicking on those links
[09:34] (574.88s)
and seeing what kind of scholarships or
[09:38] (578.16s)
awards they're they're providing. And
[09:40] (580.56s)
then you try the variations as I
[09:42] (582.48s)
mentioned. So all the variations of
[09:44] (584.24s)
those keywords and then uh also you can
[09:47] (587.84s)
do that let's say surfing scholarship
[09:50] (590.64s)
and then add the local area. So let's
[09:53] (593.44s)
just say um surfing scholarship
[09:57] (597.04s)
Huntington Beach. Okay, that's one of
[09:59] (599.04s)
the cities here in California.
[10:01] (601.92s)
And so what happens now is is you're
[10:04] (604.32s)
doing and and everything every single
[10:07] (607.12s)
type of keyword that you use and grant
[10:09] (609.44s)
awards scholarship or so and even
[10:11] (611.92s)
especially in local areas now you are
[10:14] (614.64s)
generating a laundry list of
[10:17] (617.84s)
scholarships, awards and grants that
[10:20] (620.32s)
could be available. You want to read
[10:22] (622.16s)
those and if you read those and you
[10:24] (624.32s)
qualify then you um then you apply to
[10:27] (627.44s)
them and then there you go. Okay. And so
[10:29] (629.92s)
the key thing here is you want to make
[10:31] (631.76s)
sure is that you're creating a database
[10:34] (634.08s)
of this. So get a Google sheet or an
[10:37] (637.44s)
Excel sheet or even if you just write it
[10:39] (639.36s)
down on piece of paper. Well, however
[10:41] (641.36s)
you record your stuff and you start
[10:44] (644.08s)
recording this and you specially record
[10:45] (645.76s)
again the name, the the the um what uh
[10:49] (649.44s)
the description of it, what the award is
[10:52] (652.00s)
and the biggest thing is is the due
[10:55] (655.44s)
date. Okay, it's very very important to
[10:58] (658.80s)
get the due date because what you're
[11:00] (660.72s)
going to do is you're going to use this
[11:02] (662.08s)
database to go through and every single
[11:05] (665.28s)
time for next year and the year after
[11:07] (667.44s)
and the year after you are applying to
[11:09] (669.68s)
these every single time. Okay, so that's
[11:12] (672.88s)
really really important that you're
[11:14] (674.40s)
creating this database. Okay, so um so
[11:18] (678.64s)
now that you are an expert of of doing
[11:21] (681.60s)
searches, right, where do you search?
[11:23] (683.28s)
Okay, you can, as I mentioned, you do
[11:25] (685.36s)
the search online, but there's also
[11:27] (687.60s)
other places. So, there's local
[11:29] (689.68s)
community organizations, businesses and
[11:32] (692.40s)
foundations, professional associations,
[11:35] (695.76s)
cultural and ethnic uh organizations, um
[11:39] (699.20s)
employer scholarships, niche
[11:41] (701.04s)
scholarships, uh social media and online
[11:43] (703.92s)
platforms, international scholarships,
[11:47] (707.12s)
college scholarships. So actually, you
[11:49] (709.12s)
know, the colleges that you may be
[11:51] (711.04s)
applying to may also have particular
[11:53] (713.44s)
scholarships or grants, alumni
[11:55] (715.52s)
scholarships, okay, merit-based,
[11:57] (717.52s)
need-based or major specific
[11:59] (719.44s)
scholarships. These are all um areas
[12:02] (722.72s)
where you can go ahead and search. And
[12:05] (725.12s)
if you expand your keyword list and
[12:08] (728.72s)
include all of these, now I mean you're
[12:12] (732.00s)
you have um you know a list of
[12:15] (735.04s)
scholarships that um will keep you busy
[12:18] (738.40s)
for a very very very very long time.
[12:21] (741.12s)
Okay. And I can't I can't uh impose
[12:24] (744.40s)
enough uh of how important
[12:28] (748.24s)
um even the local communities are so
[12:30] (750.96s)
because a lot of times the local
[12:33] (753.12s)
communities they don't get a lot of
[12:35] (755.60s)
applicants. um that just happens because
[12:38] (758.96s)
again they're local um and they are more
[12:42] (762.24s)
they are more inclined to give you the
[12:43] (763.92s)
scholarship if you are local to them as
[12:46] (766.32s)
well because of course they want to
[12:48] (768.08s)
provide that to the individuals that
[12:50] (770.16s)
live in their area. Okay so this is
[12:52] (772.96s)
where a key areas is where to search
[12:55] (775.28s)
okay and what what to search for. Now, I
[12:58] (778.80s)
will tell you, persistence truly pays
[13:01] (781.52s)
off. You want to make sure that you cast
[13:04] (784.24s)
a wide net and apply for as many
[13:07] (787.44s)
scholarships as possible. And I know
[13:09] (789.68s)
that may sound so cliche, but remember,
[13:12] (792.80s)
interpret loosely the requirements.
[13:15] (795.60s)
Okay? I've had students that for example
[13:20] (800.00s)
and and I I I don't mean this as as but
[13:23] (803.04s)
there was a student
[13:25] (805.28s)
he really uh enjoyed um juggling okay
[13:29] (809.84s)
and um there was um a scholarship in
[13:32] (812.96s)
which it was um about uh athletic
[13:36] (816.00s)
equipment okay athletic equipment and so
[13:39] (819.04s)
he's like I can't do that's not my the
[13:40] (820.88s)
juggling balls are not athletic I'm like
[13:42] (822.88s)
yes it is absolutely it is he applied
[13:45] (825.44s)
for it. It was unique. He got it. Okay,
[13:49] (829.20s)
it was a $500 scholarship. But again,
[13:52] (832.32s)
even the $500 scholarships, and I'm
[13:54] (834.48s)
going to talk about this, you know,
[13:55] (835.68s)
right after this, is really, really
[13:57] (837.52s)
important. But don't
[14:00] (840.24s)
read the, you know, the requirements of
[14:02] (842.40s)
the scholarship and try to be so strict
[14:05] (845.12s)
about it. Make sure that you loosely
[14:07] (847.36s)
interpret. There is no problem with
[14:10] (850.24s)
applying for a scholarship that you are
[14:12] (852.24s)
so so slightly slightly remotely um you
[14:15] (855.84s)
know applying to it. Sometimes I just
[14:17] (857.92s)
actually have to do it if it looks like
[14:19] (859.28s)
it's interesting or very cool because
[14:21] (861.44s)
you never know what's going to happen. I
[14:23] (863.52s)
have seen it where the um scholarship
[14:27] (867.28s)
committee loosely interprets because the
[14:30] (870.24s)
problem is they don't get enough
[14:32] (872.24s)
candidates or enough qualified
[14:33] (873.60s)
candidates and then what happens is they
[14:36] (876.08s)
lose the scholarship or they lose the
[14:38] (878.00s)
funding and they would rather give a
[14:40] (880.24s)
scholarship to somebody than to lose the
[14:42] (882.48s)
funding and not be able to do it the
[14:43] (883.84s)
next year. So always remember interpret
[14:45] (885.92s)
the requirements loosely. There is a
[14:48] (888.40s)
concept which I call scholarship
[14:50] (890.48s)
stacking. And this is what is the key
[14:53] (893.36s)
here. What happens here is that the
[14:56] (896.56s)
smaller renewable scholarships offer way
[15:00] (900.24s)
more flexibility and are easy to attain.
[15:03] (903.52s)
If you look for and too many people do
[15:05] (905.92s)
this problem, they look for the 20,000
[15:08] (908.40s)
the $25,000 scopes. Do you know how many
[15:11] (911.84s)
people are doing that across the
[15:13] (913.12s)
country? Everybody is because they all
[15:15] (915.04s)
want the big payday. That is not how you
[15:18] (918.24s)
want to do this. What you want to do is
[15:19] (919.76s)
you want to find the small ones. The 50,
[15:22] (922.16s)
the 100, the 250, the 500, the 750,
[15:26] (926.24s)
the,000, the,500, the 2,000, the 2500.
[15:30] (930.56s)
Those are the ones you want to find. And
[15:32] (932.08s)
you want to start stacking them.
[15:33] (933.92s)
Meaning, you want to um you want to
[15:36] (936.24s)
apply for them, get them, and you want
[15:38] (938.56s)
to start aggregating them, okay? So,
[15:41] (941.20s)
they get bigger and bigger and bigger.
[15:42] (942.88s)
And eventually, let's say your goal to
[15:45] (945.92s)
be able to fund, let's say, $25,000 in
[15:48] (948.96s)
tuition and fees, okay, for your for
[15:51] (951.68s)
your school, then you find $25,000 worth
[15:55] (955.12s)
of scholarships and you're done for the
[15:56] (956.80s)
year. Okay? Now, the key thing here is
[16:00] (960.88s)
if you find scholarships, which these
[16:02] (962.96s)
are the golden key here, if you find
[16:04] (964.88s)
scholarships that are renewable, meaning
[16:07] (967.92s)
is that if they all if they accept you,
[16:10] (970.32s)
all you have to do the next year is just
[16:13] (973.28s)
submit an app and you automatically get
[16:15] (975.36s)
it. those are the ones you want to get
[16:17] (977.68s)
because if you can get if let's say
[16:19] (979.76s)
again your um expenses for college are
[16:22] (982.96s)
$25,000 a year then all you have to do
[16:26] (986.08s)
is find $25,000 of renewable
[16:28] (988.96s)
scholarships and then you're done
[16:31] (991.28s)
because now you just have to renew them
[16:33] (993.36s)
every year. Okay? Now, some renewables
[16:36] (996.24s)
might have some stipulations like,
[16:37] (997.76s)
"Okay, yeah, you need to hit a certain
[16:39] (999.76s)
GPA or you need to be still involved in
[16:42] (1002.16s)
whatever they're doing." But again, if
[16:44] (1004.88s)
you make this a habit, you're still in
[16:46] (1006.96s)
still even past that, you're still
[16:48] (1008.40s)
looking for scholarships, you're set.
[16:50] (1010.72s)
Okay? Now, I know it's not the case
[16:52] (1012.96s)
where, oh yeah, just find them and
[16:54] (1014.48s)
that's it. Yeah, it's not that easy. It
[16:56] (1016.32s)
isn't. I'm not trying to make this like
[16:58] (1018.88s)
look like it's a simple thing. It's not.
[17:01] (1021.28s)
But it is about the persistence and the
[17:03] (1023.52s)
habit you take to go ahead and pursue
[17:07] (1027.36s)
and look for scholarships based on the
[17:09] (1029.68s)
searching that I told you about. Now you
[17:11] (1031.60s)
want to keep track of every cycle of
[17:13] (1033.20s)
scholarships. Again, as I mentioned in
[17:14] (1034.72s)
your database, you want to make sure
[17:16] (1036.16s)
that you know you're aware of the dates
[17:18] (1038.00s)
because as they come up, it's very, very
[17:20] (1040.08s)
important. And you're continuing. Okay,
[17:22] (1042.72s)
so this is the key thing. You want to
[17:24] (1044.56s)
continue searching through high school
[17:26] (1046.32s)
and through college. So even when you
[17:28] (1048.64s)
make it to college, don't stop looking
[17:30] (1050.40s)
because there's a lot of scholarships
[17:32] (1052.24s)
available for college. Now unfortunately
[17:34] (1054.80s)
it stops once you finish your bachelors.
[17:37] (1057.76s)
Okay? Once you finish your four-year
[17:40] (1060.16s)
there's not a lot of scholarships that
[17:42] (1062.00s)
offer for masters unfortunately but it
[17:44] (1064.56s)
is a numbers game. So the more
[17:46] (1066.96s)
applications you put in the more chances
[17:49] (1069.28s)
you get. Okay? It's really really
[17:51] (1071.76s)
important. All right. Now,
[17:55] (1075.12s)
I want to make sure that you be aware of
[17:57] (1077.44s)
scams because um first of all, if
[18:01] (1081.52s)
they're charging you, okay? Now, now I
[18:04] (1084.24s)
don't mean the applications like the the
[18:06] (1086.32s)
search engine out there where maybe they
[18:07] (1087.68s)
charge you a fee to use apps. That's not
[18:09] (1089.76s)
it. What I mean is that if the
[18:11] (1091.76s)
scholarship is charging you a fee and
[18:14] (1094.24s)
they're asking for personal information
[18:16] (1096.32s)
requests, that is a scam because all
[18:19] (1099.04s)
they're doing is trying to just get your
[18:20] (1100.96s)
email address or your contact
[18:22] (1102.24s)
information so they can sell it and put
[18:24] (1104.40s)
you on a list. Okay? Legitimate
[18:26] (1106.96s)
scholarships should never require any
[18:29] (1109.36s)
payment or guarantees. And usually they
[18:33] (1113.60s)
will ask for some type of information
[18:36] (1116.40s)
you have to give like for example an
[18:38] (1118.40s)
essay or a video or examples of your
[18:40] (1120.48s)
work. Always remember no work means no
[18:44] (1124.00s)
scholarship. Okay? So if it says just
[18:47] (1127.92s)
put your email address in there and
[18:49] (1129.76s)
we'll put you no it's not a scholarship.
[18:52] (1132.48s)
It's not a legitimate scholarship. Even
[18:54] (1134.08s)
if it was, I still wouldn't do it
[18:56] (1136.08s)
because again, you're going to get on a
[18:57] (1137.84s)
list and the likelihood of you winning
[19:00] (1140.32s)
that scholarship is very, very small.
[19:02] (1142.96s)
Okay? So, just be aware of that. Now,
[19:06] (1146.40s)
scholarship resources. Okay, so let's
[19:09] (1149.20s)
talk about scholarship resources. Where
[19:12] (1152.48s)
what are some resources out there that
[19:14] (1154.00s)
you can use in order to uh look for
[19:17] (1157.36s)
scholarships? Okay, first of all, here
[19:19] (1159.76s)
are some scholarship engines. Okay. Uh
[19:22] (1162.56s)
go Mary. So, Go Mary is like a one-stop
[19:25] (1165.04s)
shop. It has scholarships, has grants,
[19:27] (1167.12s)
it has like information about financial
[19:29] (1169.12s)
aid packages. Um, you can um uh direct
[19:32] (1172.64s)
apply to uh multiple scholarships. Okay.
[19:35] (1175.84s)
Uh scholarship doc scholarships.com is
[19:38] (1178.24s)
another one. It's a database with
[19:39] (1179.68s)
millions of scholarships uh including
[19:41] (1181.92s)
merit and need-based. Now, the one thing
[19:43] (1183.84s)
that I will um caution you is
[19:46] (1186.32s)
scholarships.com and fast web. They are
[19:49] (1189.52s)
the oldest. They are one of the largest
[19:51] (1191.36s)
platforms. But the only thing sometimes
[19:53] (1193.28s)
that I don't like about scholarships.com
[19:55] (1195.04s)
and fast web is that sometimes there's a
[19:57] (1197.52s)
lot of junk in there because they have
[19:58] (1198.96s)
so much in there. Um and and because
[20:02] (1202.32s)
it's so wellnown, a lot of people will,
[20:05] (1205.20s)
you know, go on there to look for
[20:06] (1206.64s)
scholarships. So, you know, I don't
[20:08] (1208.88s)
depend solely on just them because a lot
[20:11] (1211.44s)
of people they just look at fast and try
[20:13] (1213.12s)
to apply and then they never make it.
[20:14] (1214.64s)
They get discouraged and then they're
[20:15] (1215.84s)
done. So, you don't want to do that. Um
[20:19] (1219.52s)
but you know there I have seen some
[20:21] (1221.68s)
merit in fasteb and scholarship.com but
[20:24] (1224.16s)
again uh just know that it's so big and
[20:27] (1227.12s)
so many people are on it that sometimes
[20:29] (1229.12s)
it's not that you know you don't get
[20:30] (1230.72s)
success on that. Uh capex they offer
[20:33] (1233.92s)
scholarship matching and college
[20:35] (1235.44s)
admissions support. So that's pretty
[20:36] (1236.96s)
cool. Um so again the key thing here is
[20:39] (1239.28s)
scholarship matching. Uh niche.com. So
[20:41] (1241.84s)
niche.com I love niche.com. It has some
[20:44] (1244.48s)
good information. It offers um school
[20:47] (1247.20s)
rankings, student reviews, but it also
[20:48] (1248.64s)
offers easy uh to apply scholarships.
[20:51] (1251.68s)
And then College Board, which you guys
[20:53] (1253.36s)
know uh the AP exams and all that um
[20:56] (1256.00s)
they call their uh their app the big
[20:58] (1258.08s)
future. Uh it is trusted by scholarships
[21:00] (1260.72s)
and um they tie scholarships to colleges
[21:03] (1263.12s)
and major information. So that's pretty
[21:05] (1265.04s)
cool. Okay. The next thing is um local,
[21:09] (1269.28s)
state-based or hidden gems. Okay. So
[21:11] (1271.76s)
first of all, ask your high school
[21:13] (1273.76s)
counselor. Your high school counselor
[21:15] (1275.76s)
typically has a binder, has a list, or
[21:18] (1278.32s)
it's maybe through, let's say, SCORE or
[21:20] (1280.40s)
Naviance or some other type of systems
[21:23] (1283.04s)
that they use. And many offer
[21:25] (1285.68s)
scholarships to, you know, student
[21:27] (1287.36s)
account holders, meaning those that um
[21:29] (1289.92s)
have are signed up for that app that the
[21:32] (1292.32s)
the high school council uses um and they
[21:35] (1295.52s)
find ones that usually are not
[21:37] (1297.28s)
advertised out there. Okay. Community
[21:39] (1299.84s)
foundations. So, when you're doing your
[21:41] (1301.52s)
search, you know, put your community.
[21:44] (1304.08s)
Again, I I live in San Diego, so I put
[21:45] (1305.92s)
San Diego community foundation
[21:47] (1307.36s)
scholarships, something like that. And
[21:49] (1309.12s)
again, it's the same thing as my search
[21:50] (1310.56s)
engine that I talked about, the
[21:52] (1312.24s)
keywords. And there's a lot of community
[21:55] (1315.12s)
foundations out there that will give you
[21:57] (1317.20s)
scholarships just because you're part of
[21:58] (1318.64s)
the community. Uh, the Rotary Club, the
[22:01] (1321.04s)
Elks, the Kiwanis clubs, you know, they
[22:04] (1324.08s)
offer a lot of regional scholarships
[22:06] (1326.32s)
that are based on service or leadership.
[22:08] (1328.08s)
So, if you have a lot of leadership,
[22:10] (1330.00s)
have a lot of community service, I'll
[22:12] (1332.00s)
tell you these service-based
[22:13] (1333.28s)
organizations love to give away
[22:15] (1335.68s)
scholarships. Okay. Um, another thing
[22:18] (1338.00s)
that's an untapped, a lot of students
[22:19] (1339.36s)
don't do this is their parent employers
[22:21] (1341.28s)
or the unions that are out there. Really
[22:24] (1344.00s)
important. A lot of times, um, these,
[22:26] (1346.96s)
you know, these these companies have it
[22:29] (1349.04s)
because again, it's a good write-off for
[22:30] (1350.64s)
them, but as well as that they have
[22:32] (1352.80s)
actually, um, bigger SC type of
[22:35] (1355.76s)
scholarships at their companies. And so
[22:37] (1357.76s)
many of these companies and unions uh
[22:40] (1360.32s)
provide these scholarships. And so you
[22:42] (1362.24s)
want to make sure you tap into that
[22:43] (1363.68s)
everything that you do. For example, I
[22:45] (1365.84s)
belong to a church and I I didn't even
[22:47] (1367.84s)
think about that, but then I said, "Hey,
[22:49] (1369.28s)
do you guys I asked them, "Do you guys
[22:50] (1370.88s)
have scholarships?" It happens that they
[22:52] (1372.48s)
do. Okay. Um and it was a $500
[22:55] (1375.44s)
scholarship. Again, remember scholarship
[22:57] (1377.68s)
stacking. Um I would always go around to
[23:00] (1380.64s)
all of the businesses in my local area.
[23:02] (1382.96s)
I would go to the local um um business
[23:06] (1386.00s)
chapter or uh you know the the the
[23:09] (1389.68s)
business um what do you call it local
[23:11] (1391.68s)
business organization that supports all
[23:13] (1393.52s)
the local business find out and see if
[23:15] (1395.36s)
they have a database of business and I
[23:17] (1397.12s)
would contact those businesses and find
[23:18] (1398.80s)
out do you have scholarships a lot of
[23:21] (1401.20s)
times again scholarships go untaken
[23:24] (1404.08s)
because there's just no candidates
[23:25] (1405.60s)
because they just are not aware okay so
[23:28] (1408.08s)
it's really really important that that
[23:30] (1410.56s)
you um that you search locally because
[23:34] (1414.00s)
that is something that you can really
[23:35] (1415.52s)
find some really hidden gems. Okay,
[23:38] (1418.56s)
there are some sites that reuse your
[23:41] (1421.36s)
essay. So, for example, circled in, it
[23:43] (1423.76s)
lets you apply to scholarships with a
[23:45] (1425.76s)
profile instead of a long essay. So,
[23:47] (1427.52s)
what I mean is that that you fill out
[23:49] (1429.44s)
this profile. Again, it's not it's not
[23:51] (1431.92s)
something you're, you know, just just um
[23:54] (1434.16s)
putting in your email, but it's a
[23:55] (1435.68s)
profile. So you put out, you know, the
[23:57] (1437.52s)
type of person you are and answer these
[23:59] (1439.04s)
questions and then instead of a long
[24:00] (1440.96s)
essay, what they'll do is they will
[24:02] (1442.80s)
provide that out to um the the resources
[24:05] (1445.68s)
they have for scholarships. Okay.
[24:08] (1448.08s)
Another things like ton.com. It focuses
[24:10] (1450.72s)
on easy to apply scholarships um that
[24:13] (1453.44s)
don't always require new essays but can
[24:16] (1456.16s)
be you know existing essays, right? And
[24:18] (1458.56s)
then one through Sally Sally May which
[24:21] (1461.20s)
is Scolie. It helps you organize and
[24:23] (1463.36s)
find essay light opportunities. Now
[24:25] (1465.12s)
again, I will stress is that there are
[24:28] (1468.88s)
times when you're going to have to do
[24:30] (1470.40s)
work for these scholarships, but those
[24:31] (1471.84s)
are normally the ones where are those
[24:34] (1474.08s)
are the renewable ones. Those are the
[24:36] (1476.00s)
ones that you most likely will have a
[24:37] (1477.60s)
good chance in. Okay. Um rather than the
[24:40] (1480.64s)
ones that are so easy because then
[24:42] (1482.24s)
everybody will do it, right? Okay. Uh
[24:44] (1484.96s)
some application and tools like raise
[24:47] (1487.20s)
me. So raise me, they have what's called
[24:49] (1489.28s)
micro scholarships from colleges awarded
[24:51] (1491.44s)
for achievements like good grades or
[24:52] (1492.88s)
activities. These are really cool. And
[24:54] (1494.72s)
so raise me, what it does is again it
[24:56] (1496.72s)
provides you where you enter in a
[24:58] (1498.32s)
profile and then they help you look for
[25:01] (1501.12s)
scholarships based on your profile. Uh
[25:03] (1503.60s)
scholarships owl it aggregates and it
[25:06] (1506.48s)
mass applies to multiple scholarships.
[25:08] (1508.48s)
So again you know your profile it goes
[25:10] (1510.56s)
out and helps you. Okay. Now some of
[25:12] (1512.00s)
these are paid services through
[25:14] (1514.16s)
scholarship owl but again it can be
[25:16] (1516.80s)
worth it if you um uh it allow because
[25:19] (1519.76s)
then it uses the power of multiplication
[25:22] (1522.00s)
right and then of course as I mentioned
[25:23] (1523.76s)
scolie which is through Sally May
[25:25] (1525.52s)
matches scholarships as well as helps
[25:27] (1527.68s)
you track deadlines okay it is
[25:29] (1529.68s)
subscriptionbased meaning you have to
[25:31] (1531.28s)
pay for a subscription and then it
[25:33] (1533.12s)
allows you to um you know select and
[25:35] (1535.92s)
create a database of colleges but again
[25:38] (1538.72s)
it allows you to have that database
[25:42] (1542.48s)
All right. So, we were talking about all
[25:44] (1544.72s)
those resources. Are are you guys
[25:46] (1546.48s)
tracking with me so far? If you can give
[25:48] (1548.32s)
me a heart because I want to know that
[25:50] (1550.08s)
you guys are still there that you're
[25:51] (1551.68s)
still tracking that um you get Okay,
[25:54] (1554.24s)
awesome. Because I want to make sure
[25:55] (1555.92s)
this is I'm giving you some good
[25:57] (1557.68s)
information here. My gosh, we have a lot
[25:59] (1559.84s)
of people on the line. Uh which is
[26:01] (1561.68s)
amazing. Thank you so much for being
[26:03] (1563.44s)
with me. For those who are who know me,
[26:06] (1566.16s)
thank you. for those who uh have it's
[26:08] (1568.40s)
your first time I hope that you're
[26:09] (1569.92s)
getting a lot of um you know value in
[26:12] (1572.72s)
this information. So niche scholarship.
[26:15] (1575.12s)
So bas basically remember how I
[26:17] (1577.12s)
mentioned keyword keyword search
[26:19] (1579.84s)
exercise that I talked about is very
[26:22] (1582.40s)
very important. And what you want to be
[26:24] (1584.40s)
able to do for the niche scholarships is
[26:26] (1586.72s)
that that's what the keyword searches
[26:28] (1588.80s)
you know identity based like for example
[26:30] (1590.56s)
race or ethnicity or gender. Okay. Um if
[26:33] (1593.76s)
it's interest based like sports, music,
[26:36] (1596.32s)
art, STEM, aviation, community based
[26:39] (1599.44s)
like your unions or professional
[26:41] (1601.04s)
associations or your religious groups.
[26:43] (1603.36s)
um unusual scholarships like left-handed
[26:46] (1606.48s)
students, duck calling, etc. I'll tell
[26:48] (1608.64s)
you that I I there has been the oddest
[26:51] (1611.52s)
and weirdest things that students come
[26:53] (1613.28s)
up with that they are so interested in,
[26:55] (1615.28s)
but I'm telling you, I found one where
[26:57] (1617.60s)
there was um u one like I and I I joke
[27:00] (1620.64s)
about this, but the student loved to
[27:02] (1622.24s)
sleep and so he did one and he found a
[27:04] (1624.88s)
sleep therapy organization that that was
[27:08] (1628.24s)
happened to give a scholarship. I saw
[27:09] (1629.84s)
one was uh green slime or making slime
[27:13] (1633.12s)
you know the I think that's a big thing
[27:14] (1634.72s)
with the you know it's a big thing with
[27:15] (1635.84s)
the students the younger students were
[27:17] (1637.52s)
making slime was one one there was one
[27:19] (1639.92s)
for knife throwing okay and knife
[27:22] (1642.08s)
creation or knife develop um knife um
[27:25] (1645.52s)
manufacturing
[27:27] (1647.12s)
um I had one where they were uh um uh
[27:30] (1650.56s)
what do you call it sci-fi fans so there
[27:33] (1653.04s)
is so many weird and odd types of
[27:36] (1656.24s)
scholarships that you can find but it's
[27:38] (1658.24s)
a matter of member of I mentioned
[27:40] (1660.24s)
creating that keyword search because you
[27:43] (1663.12s)
will find the oddest type of
[27:44] (1664.72s)
scholarships and that no one is going to
[27:47] (1667.04s)
apply to. Like I said, left-handed
[27:48] (1668.88s)
students, it's out there. Okay? So,
[27:51] (1671.76s)
niche scholarships are often the easiest
[27:53] (1673.52s)
to win because they're the fewest
[27:55] (1675.12s)
applicants, you know, and if you think
[27:56] (1676.88s)
about your identity and your interest
[27:58] (1678.32s)
and affiliations, you know, uh, and
[28:00] (1680.88s)
these scholarships are, you know, for
[28:04] (1684.08s)
being, you know, it could be like the
[28:06] (1686.16s)
child of a firefighter or an artist or
[28:09] (1689.84s)
or I I found one was like a student was
[28:12] (1692.64s)
a a big uh star uh Star Trek fan and and
[28:16] (1696.16s)
it was speaking Cllingon. So, again, a
[28:18] (1698.32s)
lot of hidden gems. Okay.
[28:20] (1700.96s)
custom scholarships again keyword search
[28:23] (1703.44s)
like I mentioned but you know use the
[28:25] (1705.60s)
filters on those various databases that
[28:27] (1707.68s)
I was talking about uh capex big future
[28:30] (1710.96s)
um search with the as I mentioned with
[28:32] (1712.88s)
specific uh keywords like left-handed
[28:35] (1715.28s)
high school seniors okay um as I
[28:37] (1717.84s)
mentioned ask your employer church bank
[28:39] (1719.92s)
parents HR departments reach out to
[28:42] (1722.48s)
professional organizations in the fields
[28:45] (1725.04s)
of your interest so if you love biology
[28:47] (1727.60s)
then reach out to you know um any
[28:49] (1729.92s)
organization that that is associated
[28:51] (1731.92s)
with biology. Okay, so that's how you
[28:54] (1734.24s)
find these different types of
[28:55] (1735.52s)
scholarships.
[28:57] (1737.04s)
All right,
[28:58] (1738.96s)
I'm not going to go deeply into the
[29:01] (1741.12s)
scholarship essays, but I'm going to go
[29:03] (1743.20s)
over general and highle concepts, okay?
[29:05] (1745.84s)
Because um I have gone through writing
[29:09] (1749.12s)
uh essays many many trainings so you can
[29:11] (1751.76s)
go and look back. But I will tell you
[29:14] (1754.24s)
about some tips with respect to
[29:16] (1756.72s)
shortcutting the process. Okay? Because
[29:19] (1759.44s)
scholarship essays are the same as doing
[29:23] (1763.60s)
your um you know your um scholarships
[29:27] (1767.68s)
for um for your apps. Okay? And that's
[29:31] (1771.20s)
where you want to do is you want to go
[29:32] (1772.64s)
ahead and reuse okay your application um
[29:36] (1776.64s)
your application the college application
[29:40] (1780.00s)
essays. Okay. So uh here we go. The
[29:44] (1784.88s)
fastest way to win is by reusing what
[29:48] (1788.08s)
you've already written. Okay? If you
[29:50] (1790.64s)
have, let's say, a personal statement or
[29:54] (1794.16s)
let's say um a UCP, that is great. Start
[29:58] (1798.72s)
there. Okay? And so what you want to be
[30:01] (1801.04s)
able to do is you want to reuse and
[30:03] (1803.84s)
reshape your common application essays,
[30:06] (1806.48s)
your PIQ's or your UCPIQ's
[30:09] (1809.84s)
and build what we call a response bank
[30:12] (1812.72s)
with strong different types of
[30:14] (1814.96s)
paragraphs. Okay? Paragraphs about
[30:17] (1817.52s)
leadership, about overcoming challenges,
[30:20] (1820.24s)
your identity, your purpose. Okay? And
[30:22] (1822.72s)
you can shape those into any prompt, you
[30:26] (1826.64s)
know, with a little tweaks. Okay? So
[30:28] (1828.48s)
what you want to do is if you have a
[30:30] (1830.08s)
certain sentence that you like or a
[30:32] (1832.00s)
certain paragraph that you've written,
[30:33] (1833.76s)
you want to keep those in a database
[30:35] (1835.28s)
somewhere like let's say a spreadsheet
[30:36] (1836.72s)
or a document. And so it's really
[30:39] (1839.04s)
helpful if you take those and what
[30:41] (1841.28s)
you're going to do is you're going to
[30:43] (1843.12s)
tag those particular like snippets,
[30:45] (1845.84s)
okay, with a theme, leadership,
[30:48] (1848.48s)
identity, service, resilience. So that
[30:51] (1851.52s)
what happens is when a um a uh an essay
[30:56] (1856.64s)
comes up that's requested by a
[30:58] (1858.16s)
scholarship, you can just go let's say
[31:00] (1860.40s)
it's about leadership, you go straight
[31:01] (1861.84s)
to your leadership essay, okay? You pull
[31:04] (1864.16s)
it out and then you adjust it based on
[31:06] (1866.32s)
the question that they answer. Okay? So
[31:09] (1869.76s)
uh it's also helpful. Okay? And here's a
[31:12] (1872.16s)
here's a pro tip. You know, track
[31:14] (1874.56s)
everything in your spreadsheet so you
[31:16] (1876.56s)
know which responses that you've already
[31:18] (1878.64s)
used. Okay? And this is the reason and
[31:21] (1881.84s)
the one the reason why is because um uh
[31:25] (1885.52s)
if you use them and you tag them then
[31:28] (1888.32s)
it's so much easier to find them later
[31:30] (1890.48s)
right uh this is where I talk about
[31:32] (1892.56s)
creating you know base paragraphs
[31:35] (1895.04s)
modular paragraphs okay because you
[31:38] (1898.96s)
spend so much time on crafting your piqs
[31:42] (1902.16s)
and crafting your personal statements
[31:43] (1903.76s)
you can definitely use those and all you
[31:45] (1905.92s)
have to do is customize them now
[31:47] (1907.44s)
remember build a bank of short answers.
[31:50] (1910.32s)
Okay. Why you? How do you lead? Um,
[31:53] (1913.28s)
okay. So, I say this here is, you know,
[31:55] (1915.92s)
using AI tools for idea generation. Now,
[31:59] (1919.60s)
I'm going to be very cautious in saying
[32:01] (1921.52s)
this because what I don't want you to do
[32:04] (1924.08s)
is I don't want you to go and just use
[32:06] (1926.08s)
AI and just say, write me an essay about
[32:08] (1928.80s)
leadership. Okay? That is absolutely not
[32:12] (1932.08s)
what I'm saying. is what we're saying is
[32:14] (1934.80s)
is that you want to go ahead and um you
[32:18] (1938.24s)
can ask us about what are some examples
[32:20] (1940.72s)
of leadership that you and then you read
[32:23] (1943.12s)
those examples and that might jog your
[32:25] (1945.60s)
memory of things that you've done in the
[32:27] (1947.28s)
past. Okay? But please please please do
[32:30] (1950.80s)
not use AI to write your full essay.
[32:34] (1954.00s)
Okay? This needs to be about you. It
[32:36] (1956.80s)
needs to be custom about you. It needs
[32:38] (1958.80s)
to be personal about you. And remember
[32:42] (1962.88s)
the 8020 to 730 7030 rule still applies
[32:47] (1967.28s)
when writing the essays as I'm as I've
[32:49] (1969.60s)
taught before. 70% insight, 30% about
[32:53] (1973.36s)
the story. It is really, really
[32:56] (1976.32s)
important because what they're doing is
[32:58] (1978.80s)
is they're not necessarily looking for
[33:01] (1981.52s)
what you've done explicitly because that
[33:04] (1984.24s)
will probably be in a separate section
[33:06] (1986.56s)
like um your like these applications you
[33:09] (1989.52s)
use for college. They're looking about
[33:11] (1991.68s)
the type of person you are. That is more
[33:14] (1994.00s)
important because they want someone to
[33:16] (1996.56s)
represent their organization that they
[33:18] (1998.24s)
know is a good person that has a good
[33:20] (2000.80s)
heart. um that that can that can
[33:23] (2003.76s)
represent them well, okay? They don't
[33:26] (2006.24s)
want a person that's just looking out
[33:27] (2007.68s)
for money, okay? Um and is not kind and
[33:31] (2011.12s)
not is and is not courageous and
[33:32] (2012.96s)
creative. Uh so it's really really
[33:35] (2015.52s)
important that you keep the 7030 rule.
[33:39] (2019.12s)
Okay? Work smarter, not harder. start
[33:43] (2023.12s)
getting all of the of your essays, start
[33:45] (2025.12s)
getting all of your samples, putting
[33:46] (2026.88s)
them together, and creating a
[33:48] (2028.88s)
spreadsheet, a database of your
[33:51] (2031.36s)
responses. Okay? All right. So, um, I
[33:56] (2036.16s)
have this concept here, and I and this
[33:58] (2038.08s)
is this is not a this is not a concept
[34:00] (2040.48s)
that I came up with. This is just a
[34:02] (2042.32s)
pretty common concept of how do you
[34:05] (2045.84s)
execute on um doing this process of
[34:09] (2049.20s)
scholarship searching and finding and
[34:10] (2050.88s)
and doing. Okay? Okay. And it's very,
[34:12] (2052.40s)
very, very simple. Call it the weekend
[34:14] (2054.80s)
scholarship workflow. All you're going
[34:16] (2056.96s)
to do is on Friday, you're going to find
[34:20] (2060.00s)
three to five scholarships that are a
[34:21] (2061.60s)
fit. Again, you should literally be able
[34:23] (2063.68s)
to find these so very easy if you've
[34:26] (2066.40s)
done the work of the keywords, okay? And
[34:28] (2068.64s)
you have this database. Saturday,
[34:31] (2071.68s)
customize your existing essays to the
[34:33] (2073.76s)
scholarship prompt. So, all you're going
[34:35] (2075.04s)
to do now is if it's about the leader,
[34:36] (2076.88s)
you grab your leadership essay and you
[34:39] (2079.52s)
you customize it. you revise it so that
[34:43] (2083.04s)
uh it fits the scholarship prompt and
[34:45] (2085.28s)
then Sunday you submit and then you
[34:46] (2086.96s)
track it. It's that simple. Okay, you
[34:50] (2090.16s)
may say, "All right, Coach Art, that
[34:52] (2092.40s)
sounds too simple for me." But it's it
[34:54] (2094.64s)
I'm telling you it's this this is about
[34:56] (2096.64s)
a habit. Okay, this is about making a
[34:59] (2099.60s)
habit of finding scholarships. And if
[35:01] (2101.92s)
you if I can tell you that you could be
[35:04] (2104.96s)
successful at this to find so much money
[35:08] (2108.16s)
that again that it could be will that it
[35:10] (2110.32s)
will completely 100% um cover your
[35:13] (2113.36s)
expenses and it could even be more
[35:15] (2115.36s)
because I've seen students who got so
[35:17] (2117.28s)
good at this that they um that they
[35:20] (2120.00s)
actually make money off of this. And the
[35:22] (2122.48s)
reason why is because they're just given
[35:23] (2123.84s)
the money um and they they they will
[35:27] (2127.04s)
save it or they will use it for their
[35:28] (2128.80s)
other expenses. Okay. So, this is a very
[35:32] (2132.08s)
easy plan to stick with. And we're not
[35:33] (2133.92s)
asking you to do crazy amounts. 3 to
[35:36] (2136.88s)
five. If you do this every week, again,
[35:39] (2139.44s)
that's 52 weeks a year. You multiply
[35:41] (2141.92s)
that by how many scholarships you're
[35:43] (2143.52s)
applying to, it's a numbers game. Okay?
[35:47] (2147.60s)
A truly a numbers game. And if you think
[35:50] (2150.40s)
about it, let's say that you apply to,
[35:53] (2153.12s)
you know, uh, eight scholarships that
[35:55] (2155.68s)
each have $500.
[35:58] (2158.16s)
That's a again, you think about that.
[36:00] (2160.48s)
Okay. What's amazing is that's $3,500.
[36:03] (2163.84s)
Okay. $3,500 goes a long long way,
[36:07] (2167.12s)
right? Okay. So, what are some
[36:10] (2170.88s)
scholarship myths? Okay. What are some
[36:13] (2173.36s)
things that no one tells you about some
[36:16] (2176.00s)
scholarships? Okay. And we're almost
[36:17] (2177.44s)
we're almost getting to the to the end
[36:18] (2178.96s)
here. Okay. So, uh bear with me here.
[36:21] (2181.28s)
Okay. First of all,
[36:23] (2183.68s)
yes, deadlines are important. They
[36:25] (2185.84s)
really really are. Don't miss the
[36:27] (2187.44s)
deadlines. But there are a lot of times
[36:31] (2191.36s)
when deadlines may be soft and the
[36:33] (2193.76s)
reason why is because either the
[36:35] (2195.84s)
organization is not ready to review this
[36:38] (2198.16s)
stuff, the information or they didn't
[36:40] (2200.64s)
get applicants. So never just rely on
[36:44] (2204.56s)
the um the date that you see on the
[36:47] (2207.44s)
site, okay? Or what they say. What I
[36:49] (2209.60s)
would do is ask directly. Always ask
[36:52] (2212.32s)
directly. find out, oh, okay, is this
[36:55] (2215.28s)
scholarship still still going? Okay,
[36:57] (2217.28s)
because you might find out that it is.
[36:58] (2218.96s)
Okay. Um, it is very very true that many
[37:02] (2222.88s)
scholarships are underapplied,
[37:05] (2225.68s)
meaning that is that no one applies to
[37:08] (2228.00s)
them or some or very u minimal uh amount
[37:11] (2231.36s)
of people apply to them and sometimes
[37:13] (2233.76s)
again they are not qualified candidates
[37:16] (2236.56s)
and so if you are a qualified candidate
[37:18] (2238.88s)
and you're good enough, they're going to
[37:20] (2240.40s)
grab you. Okay. uh judges care more
[37:23] (2243.84s)
about story than stats and that is again
[37:26] (2246.40s)
as I mentioned the 7030 ratio 70% about
[37:30] (2250.96s)
insights 30% about the story it's really
[37:34] (2254.96s)
important that you convey to them the
[37:37] (2257.36s)
type of person that you are okay the
[37:40] (2260.56s)
type of person that you are not
[37:42] (2262.96s)
necessarily stats now again it's not a
[37:45] (2265.52s)
problem if it asks you know what have
[37:47] (2267.28s)
you done by this and that but focus on
[37:50] (2270.00s)
the insights of what you learned
[37:51] (2271.76s)
learned, how you grew, the kind of
[37:53] (2273.92s)
person that you are now, what you're
[37:55] (2275.36s)
going to do with that, all of those
[37:57] (2277.20s)
things. They love that. They love the
[37:58] (2278.80s)
warm and fuzzy stuff because again, it
[38:01] (2281.36s)
makes them feel good that they're giving
[38:03] (2283.76s)
the money to someone that really
[38:05] (2285.68s)
deserves it and that's going to
[38:07] (2287.20s)
represent them well. Okay? You don't
[38:10] (2290.16s)
need a perfect GPA to win these. It's
[38:12] (2292.32s)
not the game is not there. Again, just
[38:15] (2295.44s)
like the previous line there, they're
[38:17] (2297.04s)
not necessarily looking for stats.
[38:18] (2298.48s)
They're looking for a good person. Okay?
[38:20] (2300.40s)
Now, of course, if you have great stats,
[38:22] (2302.64s)
of course, they want to go ahead, okay?
[38:25] (2305.44s)
Of course, they want to go ahead and and
[38:27] (2307.68s)
see and make sure that um you know that
[38:31] (2311.04s)
they have um they can be proud of that.
[38:33] (2313.44s)
But again, it doesn't necessarily mean
[38:34] (2314.56s)
you have to have a perfect GPA. Okay? Uh
[38:37] (2317.76s)
scholarships aren't just for low-income
[38:39] (2319.68s)
students. They're not. Okay? They will
[38:42] (2322.40s)
give scholarships to whoever it is.
[38:43] (2323.92s)
Again, I you know, um so my my my sons,
[38:48] (2328.00s)
they've got they got a lot of sculpture
[38:49] (2329.60s)
and I know that we don't may not qualify
[38:52] (2332.40s)
um for for necessarily um some some
[38:55] (2335.44s)
certain, you know, some type of of of
[38:58] (2338.16s)
compensation for for scholarships on the
[39:00] (2340.56s)
federal side, but again, they're looking
[39:02] (2342.56s)
for the good people, right? They're
[39:04] (2344.08s)
looking for those who can represent
[39:05] (2345.44s)
them. Well, you don't have to wait until
[39:07] (2347.68s)
senior year to start. Absolutely. As I
[39:09] (2349.36s)
mentioned, you can go as starting as low
[39:11] (2351.12s)
as fourth grade, okay? And the only
[39:13] (2353.76s)
reason why we say fourth grade is
[39:15] (2355.04s)
because I've seen that there's a lot of
[39:17] (2357.12s)
um there's, you know, at that point um
[39:19] (2359.60s)
students can write well. They can
[39:21] (2361.20s)
provide, you know, good types of of um
[39:24] (2364.96s)
of information or or works and projects
[39:28] (2368.72s)
um to submit for for review. Okay. Uh
[39:32] (2372.08s)
winning one scholarship won't disqualify
[39:34] (2374.72s)
you for others. No, it won't. These
[39:37] (2377.20s)
organizations don't talk to one another
[39:39] (2379.04s)
at all. Okay. It really doesn't. So, you
[39:41] (2381.76s)
know, um you remember how I mentioned
[39:43] (2383.44s)
about scholarship stacking is very
[39:45] (2385.36s)
important. But remember again, the key
[39:48] (2388.08s)
thing here is it it can it will cut into
[39:50] (2390.80s)
your federal aid. Okay? So, you just
[39:53] (2393.84s)
have to make sure that remember because
[39:55] (2395.60s)
this is a habit and you're doing it all
[39:57] (2397.12s)
the time that just know that the more
[39:59] (2399.44s)
successful you are with the private
[40:01] (2401.60s)
scholarship route, the less that you
[40:04] (2404.24s)
will have from a federal. But that's
[40:05] (2405.92s)
okay because if you you can you can find
[40:08] (2408.88s)
much more money and much more
[40:10] (2410.80s)
eligibility that way than you can the
[40:12] (2412.80s)
federal through the federal side. Okay.
[40:15] (2415.60s)
Uh again, private scholarships can stack
[40:17] (2417.68s)
with institutional aid. You got to check
[40:19] (2419.60s)
your college policies with that. Again,
[40:21] (2421.84s)
it's one of those things where as I
[40:23] (2423.36s)
mentioned, it could be it's exactly what
[40:24] (2424.96s)
I just talked about. it could take away
[40:27] (2427.28s)
from your federal, but as long as you're
[40:29] (2429.28s)
looking for and the main thing is
[40:31] (2431.12s)
looking for the renewable private
[40:33] (2433.36s)
scholarships, then that is where um you
[40:36] (2436.88s)
know that's where the money is, you
[40:38] (2438.56s)
know, no pun intended. Okay. Okay. So,
[40:41] (2441.92s)
what are your next steps? What are the
[40:43] (2443.76s)
things that I want you to do starting
[40:46] (2446.40s)
today? You can even start this after my
[40:49] (2449.12s)
training is first of all build your
[40:51] (2451.60s)
essay bank this week. So remember how
[40:53] (2453.84s)
you build that Etsy bank. You do the
[40:55] (2455.44s)
keywords, you do the searches, you start
[40:57] (2457.76s)
uh logging them in to a spreadsheet.
[41:00] (2460.88s)
Okay? Set your weekend workflow. So make
[41:04] (2464.00s)
sure that you go ahead and the Friday
[41:05] (2465.68s)
and the Saturday and the Sunday, right?
[41:07] (2467.76s)
Friday you're doing for 3 to five
[41:09] (2469.92s)
looking I mean looking for three to five
[41:12] (2472.32s)
scholarships. Saturday you're um going
[41:15] (2475.76s)
into your um your essay bank and then
[41:18] (2478.80s)
you're p pulling the essay bank from
[41:20] (2480.72s)
whatever it applies and then you're
[41:22] (2482.48s)
submitting on Sunday right track
[41:24] (2484.40s)
everything that you submit and ask for
[41:26] (2486.64s)
feedback from someone that you trust
[41:28] (2488.48s)
with respect to reviewing your
[41:30] (2490.64s)
application and your now if you are with
[41:32] (2492.96s)
us then we absolutely can do it for you
[41:35] (2495.28s)
because your coach can definitely help
[41:37] (2497.04s)
you with that okay so you don't need to
[41:39] (2499.12s)
wait start it now okay start it
[41:41] (2501.92s)
literally now as soon as we get off.
[41:43] (2503.60s)
Okay. Um you know the and and again get
[41:47] (2507.84s)
the feedback before you submit. You know
[41:49] (2509.60s)
that that certain polish can make all
[41:52] (2512.00s)
the difference uh depending upon you
[41:54] (2514.32s)
know the the type of of writing that you
[41:56] (2516.48s)
do. Okay.
[41:59] (2519.04s)
So what are the takeaways from this
[42:02] (2522.48s)
training today? Okay. First of all,
[42:04] (2524.88s)
start early, search monthly, submit
[42:07] (2527.76s)
often. Okay. I can't tell you enough.
[42:10] (2530.32s)
This is a habit game. As I'm always
[42:12] (2532.00s)
mentioned, it's a habit. Start early,
[42:14] (2534.16s)
search monthly. Uh, actually, start
[42:16] (2536.80s)
early. I'll change that to search
[42:18] (2538.32s)
weekly. Uh, search monthly, search
[42:21] (2541.84s)
annually, submit often. Right? Okay. No
[42:24] (2544.88s)
work means no scholarship. So, remember,
[42:27] (2547.44s)
if they're asking just for um your your
[42:30] (2550.96s)
email address or your contact
[42:32] (2552.56s)
information, and they're asking you
[42:33] (2553.92s)
especially to play money for just that
[42:36] (2556.48s)
one scholarship, nope.
[42:38] (2558.56s)
uh it means that it's not a scholarship,
[42:40] (2560.72s)
not a legitimate one at least.
[42:43] (2563.12s)
Work smarter, not harder. Build your
[42:45] (2565.36s)
prompt database and reuse and revise.
[42:48] (2568.00s)
Okay, it's really really important. Uh
[42:50] (2570.64s)
make searching for a scholarship as a
[42:52] (2572.48s)
habit as I mentioned. Okay, this is a
[42:55] (2575.28s)
long-term game. This is all a numbers
[42:57] (2577.60s)
game. And so it's really really
[42:59] (2579.68s)
important that you um just put it on
[43:02] (2582.80s)
your calendar. It is like a meeting. It
[43:05] (2585.12s)
is like a task that you it is a
[43:06] (2586.96s)
continuous thing and once you build that
[43:09] (2589.44s)
database your essay your your essay bank
[43:12] (2592.72s)
and that database of scholarships it's
[43:15] (2595.68s)
an easy thing it gets so easy you get
[43:17] (2597.84s)
very very good at it and then um in
[43:20] (2600.40s)
those applications that I mentioned to
[43:22] (2602.08s)
you um you can set up alerts for new
[43:24] (2604.48s)
scholarships so based on certain
[43:26] (2606.48s)
criteria they'll send you emails say hey
[43:28] (2608.88s)
here's a new scholarship that came on
[43:30] (2610.48s)
board you know you might want to look
[43:32] (2612.24s)
into it Okay.
[43:35] (2615.12s)
All right. So, with that said, um I'm
[43:38] (2618.00s)
going to open up um um for questions. Um
[43:41] (2621.52s)
but with respect to the questions, okay,
[43:43] (2623.92s)
with respect to the questions, uh if you
[43:47] (2627.04s)
are looking for financial aid help, we
[43:50] (2630.32s)
do have coach David. Coach David is
[43:52] (2632.88s)
amazing. He is an expert at financial
[43:56] (2636.08s)
aid, particularly uh federal financial
[43:58] (2638.80s)
aid. if you want to uh take down this QR
[44:02] (2642.40s)
code, you know, snap it with your phone
[44:04] (2644.88s)
and even if you think your family makes
[44:06] (2646.96s)
too much money, we can help. Okay? So,
[44:09] (2649.28s)
go ahead and snap that. And uh if you
[44:12] (2652.24s)
are new to us and you are you don't you
[44:14] (2654.56s)
don't have let's say a coach or a
[44:16] (2656.00s)
program yet uh if you want to book a
[44:18] (2658.40s)
free um 15-minute assessment with us so
[44:21] (2661.12s)
that we can just give you a free
[44:23] (2663.36s)
assessment of you know where your
[44:24] (2664.80s)
student is please type the word book B O
[44:28] (2668.40s)
K to 949775865
[44:32] (2672.56s)
okay book at 949775865
[44:37] (2677.20s)
and we can administer a free assessment
[44:40] (2680.32s)
for for you. Okay, free assessment for
[44:42] (2682.72s)
you. All right, so with that said,
[44:47] (2687.36s)
um are there any questions? Oh, well
[44:50] (2690.16s)
actually before that, how did you guys
[44:52] (2692.48s)
think about this content? Was it helpful
[44:54] (2694.08s)
for you? If you do, please give me a
[44:55] (2695.52s)
heart because you know I'm the reaction
[44:57] (2697.04s)
coach. I love to Okay, good. Because
[45:00] (2700.08s)
remember, I take a lot of time in
[45:01] (2701.92s)
putting this stuff together and I want
[45:04] (2704.00s)
to make sure that I'm giving you the
[45:05] (2705.92s)
content that you really really want and
[45:08] (2708.24s)
need and it's valuable to you. So, thank
[45:10] (2710.64s)
you so much. Okay. Are there any
[45:12] (2712.80s)
questions? Oh, thank you. Yes, a lot. I
[45:15] (2715.36s)
see a lot of thank yous there. Thank you
[45:16] (2716.72s)
so much as well. I greatly appreciate
[45:18] (2718.48s)
it. Are there any questions? This
[45:20] (2720.24s)
stuff's pretty straightforward. So, um
[45:22] (2722.64s)
any questions from the gallery? I don't
[45:25] (2725.44s)
see any questions here.
[45:28] (2728.56s)
Okay, I'll ask one more time. Are there
[45:30] (2730.48s)
any questions that you guys have with
[45:34] (2734.48s)
respect to
[45:36] (2736.40s)
um the scholarships and how to find them
[45:38] (2738.48s)
and where to go?
[45:41] (2741.60s)
Okay. All right. Cool. All right. Well,
[45:45] (2745.92s)
uh with that said, again, I'll just just
[45:48] (2748.16s)
kind of preview again. If you haven't
[45:50] (2750.16s)
talked to uh Coach David yet, I would
[45:52] (2752.64s)
highly suggest a uh if not ethnic video.
[45:57] (2757.04s)
Okay. Now, there was one question here.
[45:59] (2759.20s)
Let's see. If not ethnic video,
[46:04] (2764.00s)
okay, I don't know what that means, but
[46:06] (2766.64s)
if you're saying is should you should
[46:09] (2769.20s)
you provide a video? Um, if that's
[46:12] (2772.00s)
basically what they're asking for, then
[46:14] (2774.16s)
yes, you're going to have to go by the
[46:16] (2776.48s)
requirements of the scholarship. Uh, I
[46:19] (2779.20s)
don't know what you mean by if not
[46:20] (2780.80s)
ethnic, but again, um, I would say is if
[46:23] (2783.60s)
that's part of the requirements, then
[46:25] (2785.12s)
absolutely. Um ah okay so biased against
[46:29] (2789.68s)
a majority race. Well you know the the
[46:33] (2793.12s)
actually the key things here and I I'm
[46:34] (2794.80s)
just say again I'm minority is that I
[46:37] (2797.28s)
love I look for those scholarships that
[46:39] (2799.60s)
are you know a minority um minority um
[46:43] (2803.04s)
scholarships. Okay. I don't really care
[46:45] (2805.60s)
about the the major ones or so. I look
[46:48] (2808.16s)
for those because that's where the
[46:49] (2809.68s)
uniqueness is and that's where you most
[46:51] (2811.76s)
likely will get um you know a bite.
[46:54] (2814.16s)
Okay. It's those major ones that I don't
[46:56] (2816.72s)
that I look at and I say, "Ah, you know
[46:58] (2818.48s)
what? Probably everybody and their mom
[47:00] (2820.32s)
are are applying to those." Okay. So, um
[47:03] (2823.04s)
I understand about if not ethnic video.
[47:05] (2825.52s)
Yes, go ahead and do a video. But we we
[47:08] (2828.48s)
you know uh with respect to bias,
[47:10] (2830.48s)
there's nothing we can do to control
[47:11] (2831.84s)
that. But what we can do is is we can
[47:14] (2834.80s)
control the number of applications we
[47:16] (2836.96s)
put out there. Right? So that's the key
[47:18] (2838.96s)
thing is the number, not necessarily um
[47:21] (2841.20s)
the this the being selective. Do you
[47:23] (2843.28s)
have an Excel template for scholarship
[47:24] (2844.96s)
tracking? Actually, it's funny that you
[47:26] (2846.96s)
asked that. Um, I have put out a
[47:29] (2849.52s)
scholarship tracking. I was going to put
[47:31] (2851.20s)
some freebies out there, but uh I had I
[47:33] (2853.60s)
have to actually pull that out. So, um
[47:36] (2856.80s)
uh so what I'm going to do is this. Um I
[47:39] (2859.60s)
will see if I can uh for the next time
[47:41] (2861.76s)
around is I will get some free resources
[47:44] (2864.16s)
out there. Um put it out for all of our
[47:45] (2865.92s)
families. You just need a background.
[47:47] (2867.92s)
Oh, yes. I'm so sorry. It was strange.
[47:50] (2870.32s)
We had a little bit of technical issues.
[47:51] (2871.84s)
Normally we have an eagle lock
[47:53] (2873.04s)
background. So, but thank you for that.
[47:54] (2874.48s)
Yes, we do need a Coronado bridge uh
[47:56] (2876.80s)
because uh I am in San Diego uh and I
[47:59] (2879.92s)
love San Diego. So, all right. Uh with
[48:03] (2883.28s)
that said, um thank you so much for
[48:06] (2886.72s)
joining me. I always say this and I s it
[48:09] (2889.68s)
sincerely. Uh you guys um I love it
[48:13] (2893.60s)
doing these these training uh training
[48:15] (2895.76s)
sessions with you. And the reason why is
[48:17] (2897.76s)
because I know that you're coming home
[48:20] (2900.48s)
and you could spend time with your
[48:22] (2902.24s)
family, your friends, your loved ones or
[48:24] (2904.40s)
do other things but you uh you choose to
[48:26] (2906.64s)
spend time with me and I am always
[48:29] (2909.12s)
grateful for that. So thank you for your
[48:31] (2911.04s)
support. Thank you for always coming on.
[48:33] (2913.92s)
uh it is truly truly appreciative and um
[48:37] (2917.20s)
I will continue to do these as long as
[48:39] (2919.36s)
you guys are showing up and as long as
[48:41] (2921.36s)
you guys can give me those hearts and
[48:42] (2922.96s)
show me uh show me that uh that the
[48:45] (2925.52s)
information I'm giving is valuable. So
[48:47] (2927.52s)
with that said, have a wonderful the
[48:49] (2929.52s)
rest of your week and um and uh good
[48:53] (2933.36s)
luck in your scholarship searching and
[48:55] (2935.76s)
we will see you next Tuesday. All right,
[48:58] (2938.48s)
thanks you so much. Have a wonderful
[49:00] (2940.88s)
rest of your evening. Take it easy.
[49:03] (2943.04s)
Bye-bye.
