[00:01] (1.80s)
all right welcome everyone my name is
[00:03] (3.28s)
coach David and it is April 2nd okay now
[00:06] (6.84s)
normally we have a full kind of uh you
[00:09] (9.80s)
know training that is dedicated to
[00:11] (11.72s)
financial aid today but as I always tell
[00:14] (14.76s)
families there's two parts to this
[00:16] (16.68s)
college admissions game the first part
[00:18] (18.52s)
is getting in the second part is making
[00:20] (20.44s)
sure that you get enough money to pay
[00:21] (21.92s)
for it so that you don't have to dip
[00:23] (23.68s)
into your retirement you don't have to
[00:25] (25.40s)
kind of you know uh you know dip into
[00:27] (27.48s)
your investment so on and so forth Okay
[00:29] (29.64s)
so uh we are going to talk about kind of
[00:31] (31.60s)
two different areas today right one is
[00:33] (33.92s)
going to be about uh the school side
[00:36] (36.84s)
right what your what your kind of Junior
[00:38] (38.64s)
current Junior should be doing right
[00:40] (40.48s)
we'll also talk about financial aid what
[00:42] (42.44s)
to expect and also what parents you
[00:45] (45.08s)
should be doing right because there's
[00:46] (46.24s)
some things that parents need to do
[00:47] (47.84s)
during this process as well okay so just
[00:50] (50.68s)
to give you a quick overview of what we
[00:52] (52.48s)
will be talking about today right so
[00:54] (54.88s)
we're going to talk about financial aid
[00:56] (56.12s)
we're going to talk about academics and
[00:57] (57.40s)
kind of school things right we're also
[00:58] (58.88s)
going to talk about other important
[01:00] (60.08s)
things that you need to kind of think
[01:01] (61.40s)
about as we are kind of going into
[01:03] (63.48s)
application season right now if you do
[01:06] (66.52s)
want to get this replay because you
[01:08] (68.24s)
think it was so critical and all the
[01:10] (70.52s)
information I was giving you was so
[01:11] (71.80s)
great right uh it will be on our private
[01:14] (74.48s)
uh you know YouTube channel right for
[01:16] (76.00s)
our coaching families uh if you are one
[01:17] (77.76s)
of our families in from our Facebook go
[01:19] (79.92s)
ahead and you know respond to the post
[01:22] (82.16s)
that I will make in our Facebook groups
[01:24] (84.64s)
okay now just a little bit about me
[01:26] (86.88s)
right uh I am a former college and Law
[01:29] (89.52s)
School admission reader right uh I have
[01:32] (92.12s)
also you know worked in the legal space
[01:34] (94.52s)
right and I have helped hundreds and
[01:36] (96.88s)
thousands of families right uh with
[01:39] (99.36s)
their financial aid right and so today
[01:42] (102.24s)
I'm going to be kind of putting on both
[01:43] (103.56s)
of my hats right that of kind of one of
[01:46] (106.16s)
the kind of head strategists in our
[01:47] (107.60s)
coaching program also as the kind of
[01:50] (110.88s)
head of the financial aid program as
[01:52] (112.96s)
well okay now just to kind of like give
[01:55] (115.80s)
you guys a little bit of background
[01:57] (117.36s)
about where I was today right so um a
[02:01] (121.00s)
lot of people might uh have been looking
[02:03] (123.12s)
for me in our coaching program but today
[02:04] (124.68s)
I was gone right and I was gone because
[02:07] (127.12s)
I was at a kind of work conference right
[02:09] (129.96s)
uh I was at the Western Association of
[02:12] (132.40s)
college ad missions counselors okay um
[02:15] (135.32s)
it was held at St Mary's College in
[02:17] (137.16s)
Moraga right some people might know that
[02:19] (139.68s)
area some people might not uh but it is
[02:21] (141.92s)
a quiet suburb in the East Bay Area
[02:25] (145.48s)
about 25 30 minutes away from San
[02:27] (147.52s)
Francisco okay now the reason why I went
[02:30] (150.32s)
there was because I wanted to provide
[02:32] (152.04s)
more for our kind of families right now
[02:35] (155.12s)
when I when I got there right I was
[02:36] (156.64s)
listening intently one of the things I
[02:38] (158.60s)
realized was that a lot of people don't
[02:40] (160.76s)
have basic information right even when I
[02:43] (163.52s)
was walking in right uh the majority of
[02:45] (165.44s)
people at that conference were high
[02:47] (167.08s)
school guidance counselors right and
[02:49] (169.36s)
while I do think that high school
[02:50] (170.84s)
guidance counselors do a great job and
[02:52] (172.88s)
they're you know they're definitely
[02:53] (173.88s)
overwork they have huge you know um you
[02:56] (176.36s)
know student to kind of employee ratios
[02:59] (179.20s)
when it comes to kind of meeting with
[03:00] (180.48s)
students and doing those things right
[03:02] (182.44s)
the one area that I saw that they
[03:04] (184.24s)
weren't able to help families is kind of
[03:06] (186.52s)
like getting into the nitty-gritty and
[03:08] (188.24s)
the specifics about each individual
[03:10] (190.08s)
student right and so um that it was
[03:14] (194.16s)
where I was earlier today right uh they
[03:16] (196.72s)
did have a taco truck which I was really
[03:18] (198.56s)
happy about so I got to eat some tacos
[03:20] (200.84s)
um but uh I just wanted to kind of let
[03:22] (202.88s)
you guys know uh if you guys are
[03:24] (204.52s)
interested I will probably be kind of
[03:26] (206.48s)
unveiling what I learned um later on in
[03:29] (209.56s)
a training probably I believe it's on uh
[03:33] (213.24s)
I believe it's on the 24th April 24th
[03:36] (216.28s)
okay so that'll be uh a training that we
[03:38] (218.64s)
have right I'll be taking over for Coach
[03:40] (220.32s)
Victor that's usually on Thursdays right
[03:42] (222.48s)
and so um I will kind of unveil what I
[03:44] (224.52s)
learned there um kind of what uh and you
[03:47] (227.04s)
know representatives from the uc's the
[03:48] (228.88s)
CSUS various different colleges were
[03:51] (231.16s)
there as well so I'll kind of try and
[03:53] (233.68s)
unravel and kind of piece together
[03:55] (235.76s)
everything that was said so that it is a
[03:57] (237.44s)
little bit more coherent okay and so I
[04:00] (240.32s)
will be kind of sharing that with you
[04:02] (242.32s)
there now when it comes to financial aid
[04:04] (244.92s)
we are having this kind of uh this
[04:07] (247.80s)
meeting on a very auspicious day right
[04:10] (250.12s)
because as I have been telling families
[04:12] (252.36s)
over and over and over if you have a
[04:14] (254.40s)
senior right now and you didn't apply
[04:16] (256.28s)
for financial aid today is technically
[04:19] (259.08s)
the deadline for the priority it's like
[04:21] (261.64s)
the this is the kind of it right April
[04:23] (263.60s)
second is the priority deadline deadline
[04:26] (266.96s)
right um and so after this can you still
[04:30] (270.08s)
get Aid yeah you can but again they
[04:32] (272.80s)
always say like the money will run out
[04:35] (275.00s)
right um or like they will they you know
[04:37] (277.68s)
the allocated money will run out right
[04:39] (279.32s)
they never really actually run out of
[04:40] (280.52s)
money it's just that the money that they
[04:41] (281.72s)
allocated for a certain year might run
[04:43] (283.40s)
out right so if you are a senior right
[04:46] (286.80s)
now and you have not done your financial
[04:49] (289.72s)
aid right and you're here because you
[04:51] (291.68s)
saw the price tag of of the schools that
[04:53] (293.88s)
you got into and you didn't apply for
[04:56] (296.96s)
any financial aid
[04:59] (299.92s)
man I wasn't going to do this but if you
[05:01] (301.40s)
are a senior right and you're in
[05:03] (303.20s)
California right and you haven't applied
[05:05] (305.36s)
for financial aid and you're kind of
[05:06] (306.64s)
come here as a latch ditch effort to
[05:08] (308.12s)
kind of figure out what you can do I
[05:10] (310.40s)
need you to email me right like right
[05:13] (313.60s)
now right so the I'm going to put the
[05:15] (315.76s)
email in h in the in the chat here okay
[05:20] (320.32s)
I want you to email this email okay uh I
[05:24] (324.00s)
will find a time to meet with you
[05:25] (325.48s)
tonight whether it is you know 9:00 in
[05:28] (328.40s)
the evening 10:00 in the evening 11:00
[05:30] (330.96s)
in the evening it is the kind of like it
[05:33] (333.48s)
is the 12th hour now right so uh we
[05:35] (335.92s)
should talk about it figure out if we
[05:37] (337.20s)
are going to move forward and if we are
[05:39] (339.08s)
right I'll tell you what I think I can
[05:40] (340.36s)
save you guys how how we're going to
[05:41] (341.96s)
move forward and all those different
[05:43] (343.04s)
pieces okay but the priority deadline
[05:45] (345.84s)
ends today okay now again I put it in I
[05:50] (350.08s)
put the the email in the chat so go
[05:52] (352.08s)
ahead again if you are a senior and you
[05:53] (353.92s)
need to talk to me today right um I took
[05:56] (356.88s)
the day off uh to make sure that I had
[05:58] (358.68s)
enough time to go to the conference
[06:00] (360.08s)
earlier today um and so I have meetings
[06:02] (362.24s)
starting at 6:30 if that is something
[06:04] (364.48s)
that you want okay now as far as
[06:07] (367.64s)
financial aid news which I know is a big
[06:09] (369.60s)
kind of like draw for a lot of our
[06:10] (370.96s)
families like what the heck is going on
[06:13] (373.16s)
a lot of this stuff was also kind of
[06:15] (375.60s)
brought up at kind of The Wack at
[06:18] (378.12s)
conference right and again I I will kind
[06:20] (380.76s)
of uh un unpack that uh I need I need
[06:23] (383.84s)
time to debrief on my own too I took a
[06:25] (385.64s)
lot of notes so um but generally
[06:27] (387.84s)
speaking everyone's kind of worried
[06:29] (389.36s)
about but the colleges don't know what's
[06:31] (391.00s)
going on right high schools don't know
[06:33] (393.24s)
what's going on right I think I might
[06:35] (395.64s)
have the the the kind of uh the the most
[06:38] (398.92s)
interest in it so I I feel like I wanted
[06:41] (401.36s)
to be a part of lot lot of conversations
[06:42] (402.92s)
but I didn't want to step on any toes
[06:44] (404.64s)
right but generally speaking right um
[06:47] (407.36s)
these are the high Lev things that have
[06:48] (408.52s)
been happening there's nothing new out
[06:49] (409.76s)
there everything is just a repeat of the
[06:51] (411.20s)
news that I've been kind of giving you
[06:52] (412.48s)
guys for the last two three weeks right
[06:54] (414.12s)
US Department of Education possibly
[06:55] (415.80s)
being eliminated or divided into smaller
[06:57] (417.64s)
chunks and given out to other department
[06:59] (419.72s)
ments right colleges are losing Federal
[07:01] (421.92s)
funding to do a variety of reasons right
[07:04] (424.36s)
including not abiding abiding by Dei
[07:06] (426.68s)
like or kind of the executive order
[07:08] (428.32s)
getting rid of Dei initiatives right um
[07:11] (431.04s)
now there are a lot more colleges that
[07:12] (432.76s)
are looking to Gap The Divide between
[07:14] (434.56s)
the losses that they're getting in
[07:16] (436.00s)
funding and family costs right by
[07:18] (438.28s)
increasing Aid budget that's always a
[07:20] (440.00s)
good thing to hear right and then uh
[07:22] (442.68s)
this is kind of like a not good thing
[07:24] (444.24s)
right this is kind of like the maybe the
[07:25] (445.32s)
new piece of news right but there's many
[07:26] (446.96s)
colleges that are going above that 100 k
[07:29] (449.88s)
Mark right I feel like everyone's racing
[07:31] (451.44s)
to be like the the first 10 schools that
[07:33] (453.60s)
are over $100,000 but Vanderbilt was the
[07:36] (456.60s)
kind of like the the trend Setter and
[07:39] (459.12s)
now another one is Welsley right uh in
[07:42] (462.08s)
Massachusetts right that one has gone
[07:44] (464.16s)
over the 100K Mark for total cost of
[07:46] (466.08s)
attendance per year okay so again
[07:49] (469.00s)
there's no new news it's just kind of
[07:51] (471.12s)
like reiterations of what has been out
[07:53] (473.16s)
there right um but I will try to kind of
[07:55] (475.72s)
keep you guys up to date with any new
[07:57] (477.16s)
information right a lot of it's still up
[07:59] (479.64s)
in the air things are still kind of um
[08:01] (481.76s)
you know getting settled right uh new
[08:03] (483.56s)
Administration they're trying to make a
[08:04] (484.84s)
lot of moves first 100 days right um
[08:07] (487.20s)
things like that but once Things become
[08:09] (489.88s)
more clear and more precise I will try
[08:13] (493.08s)
to provide you with the most up-to-date
[08:14] (494.56s)
information okay but with that let us
[08:17] (497.08s)
get into the training again my fair
[08:19] (499.28s)
warning when it comes to financial aid
[08:21] (501.36s)
right if you are here and this is
[08:23] (503.84s)
something that you're going to say to me
[08:25] (505.12s)
during your consultation you don't even
[08:26] (506.60s)
need to bring it up right oh my family
[08:29] (509.48s)
makes a little bit too much money right
[08:31] (511.96s)
my family's not going to be eligible
[08:33] (513.44s)
right we own our own home we have a
[08:34] (514.92s)
rental property right um you know this
[08:37] (517.48s)
that so on and so forth there's a lot of
[08:38] (518.68s)
rumors out there and every single one of
[08:41] (521.04s)
them has not been a deterrent to our
[08:43] (523.00s)
families getting financial aid right so
[08:45] (525.60s)
again I will have the kind of the QR
[08:47] (527.40s)
code I will have a link that you can use
[08:49] (529.28s)
to sign up for a financial aid call I
[08:50] (530.92s)
will also have a QR link where you can
[08:52] (532.56s)
sign up for a kind of breakthrough call
[08:54] (534.88s)
right with our coaching team if that's
[08:56] (536.96s)
something that you want as well right to
[08:58] (538.44s)
learn more about kind of the College
[08:59] (539.68s)
admissions process all right now again
[09:03] (543.56s)
because it is split right and I always
[09:05] (545.32s)
kind of you know like to kind of talk
[09:07] (547.04s)
about eagal lock which is our parent
[09:08] (548.60s)
company right uh I do want to make sure
[09:10] (550.84s)
that families that do have Juniors right
[09:12] (552.52s)
and I see a bunch of people that have
[09:13] (553.56s)
marked juniors in the Q&A and in the
[09:15] (555.64s)
chat right um we do have a college
[09:18] (558.80s)
application intensive that starts this
[09:20] (560.88s)
month right our first Kickstart right
[09:23] (563.48s)
which is a one-day weekend event where
[09:26] (566.08s)
we basically work with families and
[09:28] (568.52s)
students right mostly students right
[09:30] (570.28s)
families you guys are there for
[09:31] (571.24s)
emotional support but again Mom and Dad
[09:33] (573.80s)
you need to stay out of the
[09:35] (575.12s)
conversations we are talking to students
[09:37] (577.56s)
right but it is it is the kind of day
[09:40] (580.12s)
where we have students come in so that
[09:41] (581.84s)
we can formulate their ideas get them on
[09:43] (583.72s)
track with a with a very solid rough
[09:45] (585.52s)
draft right those will be happening in
[09:47] (587.28s)
April May and June right and then the
[09:50] (590.24s)
second part of our College app intensive
[09:52] (592.48s)
is our accelerator okay the accelerator
[09:54] (594.84s)
is going to be in a small group format
[09:56] (596.64s)
right five to one right student to coach
[09:58] (598.96s)
right um and those are going to be in
[10:00] (600.60s)
July August and September if you are
[10:02] (602.84s)
interested in this again you can also
[10:04] (604.80s)
reach out uh to us via text we can
[10:06] (606.64s)
provide you more information right um
[10:08] (608.64s)
but you can also visit our website it is
[10:10] (610.20s)
collegea intensive.com
[10:12] (612.40s)
okay um but again getting into college
[10:15] (615.08s)
is one piece the other piece getting
[10:16] (616.88s)
money for college right so hopefully we
[10:19] (619.68s)
can take care of both sides of the coin
[10:21] (621.64s)
for you okay now class of 2026 right let
[10:25] (625.64s)
us get into the training so what are the
[10:28] (628.96s)
things that you need to be thinking
[10:30] (630.52s)
about okay there's two sides of the
[10:33] (633.04s)
puzzle right like I was I've been saying
[10:34] (634.84s)
since the beginning of this training
[10:36] (636.44s)
right Juniors listen up right if you are
[10:38] (638.64s)
a junior family you need to be listening
[10:41] (641.40s)
okay open those ears I know that a lot
[10:43] (643.16s)
of people might be getting ready for
[10:44] (644.80s)
dinner right kids just got home it it is
[10:47] (647.56s)
kind of like crazy but this is something
[10:49] (649.84s)
that you do need to hear okay there's
[10:52] (652.04s)
two sides the first side is admissions
[10:54] (654.24s)
right so the things are what types of
[10:56] (656.28s)
things should you be focused on right
[10:58] (658.52s)
and we'll talk about riger we'll talk
[10:59] (659.96s)
about testing and we'll talk about
[11:01] (661.32s)
letters of recommendation okay and then
[11:03] (663.76s)
on the financial aid side the question
[11:05] (665.84s)
is what are we supposed to be doing this
[11:07] (667.64s)
spring how to prepare for the fall and
[11:10] (670.32s)
what are you doing in the fall okay so
[11:13] (673.68s)
those are the things that we're going to
[11:14] (674.84s)
go over today really quickly again I try
[11:17] (677.44s)
to give the kind of large overview any
[11:19] (679.72s)
small like specific things if you do
[11:22] (682.32s)
have questions please make sure to ask
[11:24] (684.08s)
them in the Q&A or in the chat I will
[11:25] (685.88s)
try to answer them as they come up but
[11:28] (688.52s)
if not I will make sure to address them
[11:30] (690.12s)
at the end okay so let's first talk
[11:32] (692.88s)
about the admission side of things right
[11:34] (694.56s)
your student getting into the school
[11:37] (697.00s)
right one of the first things that
[11:39] (699.36s)
colleges look when they're looking at a
[11:41] (701.36s)
student is their academic rigor right so
[11:44] (704.08s)
for juniors right now you need to be
[11:45] (705.88s)
pushing or maintaining your academics
[11:49] (709.08s)
okay so you want your junior year to be
[11:52] (712.28s)
your shining achievement okay now
[11:55] (715.60s)
there's different students that come
[11:56] (716.76s)
from different backgrounds we have
[11:57] (717.96s)
students that have excelled their whole
[11:59] (719.88s)
High School career we also have students
[12:01] (721.68s)
that might have started off a little bit
[12:02] (722.92s)
Rocky but they're getting a lot better
[12:04] (724.84s)
right and then we have students that
[12:06] (726.36s)
kind of yo-yo back and forth right uh
[12:09] (729.08s)
some Sometimes some years are better
[12:10] (730.80s)
than others some semesters are better
[12:12] (732.24s)
than others right but whatever it is you
[12:14] (734.72s)
need to remember that this last semester
[12:17] (737.36s)
and last kind of SE like trimester is
[12:21] (741.16s)
kind of like the last grouping of grades
[12:24] (744.24s)
that your school or like the college
[12:26] (746.32s)
that you apply to will see okay now I
[12:29] (749.32s)
know that a lot of people will say no
[12:30] (750.68s)
there's private schools that do look at
[12:32] (752.56s)
your first semester grades of senior
[12:34] (754.20s)
year that is true right but for the
[12:37] (757.72s)
there are a there are a lot of schools
[12:39] (759.60s)
that will never see your senior year
[12:41] (761.32s)
grades until you are in one of those
[12:43] (763.64s)
being like the uc's the CSUS will also
[12:46] (766.96s)
not see it right and if you apply early
[12:49] (769.24s)
action or early decision right to any
[12:52] (772.08s)
any kind of other schools right you will
[12:54] (774.72s)
not be able to show your first semester
[12:56] (776.96s)
grades now having said that is your
[12:59] (779.16s)
senior year not important no it is very
[13:02] (782.24s)
important Okay the reason why it is
[13:04] (784.68s)
important is because they take the
[13:06] (786.88s)
strength of your senior year schedule
[13:08] (788.96s)
into account so if there's a student
[13:11] (791.24s)
that took six APS junior year and now
[13:13] (793.88s)
they're taking none senior year they're
[13:16] (796.16s)
going to see that as a problem right so
[13:18] (798.44s)
again I understand burnout is real right
[13:21] (801.08s)
and so that's one of the things that we
[13:22] (802.64s)
talk about with our students right you
[13:24] (804.24s)
need to make sure that you're kind of
[13:26] (806.24s)
getting used to things right 10th grade
[13:27] (807.92s)
year take a couple AP right push it the
[13:30] (810.48s)
next year push it senior year that's
[13:32] (812.24s)
what we want to see but if you have had
[13:34] (814.32s)
obstacles this junior year kind of these
[13:36] (816.64s)
ending Spring grades are going to be
[13:38] (818.68s)
very important to show that you have
[13:40] (820.16s)
made Improvement have made growth right
[13:43] (823.00s)
now there might be Juniors out there and
[13:45] (825.20s)
it's like well yeah sorry I didn't
[13:46] (826.72s)
really push myself as hard as I could
[13:48] (828.84s)
have right then this summer is a great
[13:52] (832.08s)
opportunity to increase General rigor or
[13:54] (834.44s)
show your interest right so whether
[13:56] (836.44s)
that's Community College classes or
[13:58] (838.32s)
online high School classes or summer
[14:00] (840.48s)
camps or programs those are areas that
[14:02] (842.68s)
you want to be pushing in to show
[14:04] (844.48s)
colleges that you really mean business
[14:06] (846.88s)
okay now for Community College classes I
[14:08] (848.96s)
get it there are some Stu students at
[14:11] (851.04s)
certain schools where their school will
[14:12] (852.64s)
not approve them and that's the only way
[14:14] (854.00s)
to do it but that's why it's great that
[14:15] (855.80s)
there's multiple options online high
[14:17] (857.92s)
school classes you don't need to get
[14:19] (859.84s)
anyone's approval to take those right so
[14:22] (862.72s)
there are different options for
[14:24] (864.20s)
different students there's even kind of
[14:25] (865.88s)
like extension courses at certain
[14:27] (867.92s)
colleges where you don't need anyone's
[14:29] (869.96s)
approval to take it right I do know that
[14:32] (872.60s)
kind of like in the Bay Area Schools are
[14:35] (875.32s)
very different some schools are like
[14:36] (876.52s)
yeah Community College classes we love
[14:37] (877.92s)
them yeah give me that form let me sign
[14:39] (879.32s)
it right there's also schools where it's
[14:42] (882.12s)
like no you can only take this class
[14:44] (884.72s)
that's the only one you can take we're
[14:45] (885.88s)
not going to sign off on any other thing
[14:47] (887.60s)
right so keep that in mind I understand
[14:49] (889.60s)
that there are restrictions for for you
[14:51] (891.16s)
know different school districts but this
[14:53] (893.08s)
is what the general Trend that we want
[14:54] (894.72s)
to see okay so that's what I would have
[14:56] (896.80s)
to say about rigger okay now when it
[14:59] (899.52s)
comes to testing okay I'm talking about
[15:02] (902.20s)
standardized testing right and I'm not
[15:04] (904.28s)
talking about your school CAA SP testing
[15:08] (908.16s)
right for English and math right those
[15:09] (909.92s)
are just kind of tests you take to make
[15:11] (911.96s)
sure that you've hit certain benchmarks
[15:14] (914.40s)
that the state has outlined right for
[15:16] (916.28s)
graduating high school right when I'm
[15:18] (918.20s)
talking about testing I talking about
[15:20] (920.20s)
SAT and ACT now for a lot of families
[15:23] (923.68s)
out there you might not even be thinking
[15:26] (926.16s)
about it right because it's like oh well
[15:28] (928.44s)
everything was test optional you know a
[15:29] (929.88s)
couple years ago right or test blind
[15:32] (932.04s)
right that was during covid times right
[15:34] (934.36s)
during the pandemic right unfortunately
[15:37] (937.32s)
there are a lot of schools that are
[15:38] (938.92s)
returning to test required now again
[15:40] (940.96s)
qualifier right the uc's and the CSUS
[15:43] (943.68s)
are test blind they will not take your
[15:45] (945.84s)
test score into an account into account
[15:47] (947.84s)
right there are people that say oh well
[15:49] (949.92s)
there's a space to put it right uh on
[15:52] (952.12s)
the application there is actually not
[15:54] (954.72s)
right if you are an international
[15:56] (956.60s)
student right coming from a different
[15:58] (958.52s)
country
[15:59] (959.44s)
right then you might be able to turn in
[16:01] (961.52s)
your English kind of sat or act right
[16:04] (964.52s)
the English section in order to show
[16:06] (966.56s)
your English proficiency but if you are
[16:08] (968.88s)
a domestic us student there is no way to
[16:12] (972.12s)
turn in your sat your full SAT score to
[16:15] (975.64s)
the uc's or CSUS they don't want it if
[16:18] (978.36s)
you do try to turn it in they just see
[16:20] (980.72s)
you as someone that doesn't follow the
[16:22] (982.48s)
rules so I would not do it okay like but
[16:25] (985.40s)
like I said there are a lot of out ofate
[16:27] (987.16s)
Public Schools there's a lot of private
[16:29] (989.08s)
schools that are returning to test
[16:30] (990.96s)
required so you need to check what the
[16:33] (993.48s)
policy of the schools you're applying to
[16:36] (996.08s)
will be okay
[16:38] (998.52s)
now when will the kind of like finalized
[16:41] (1001.32s)
results come out as far as if a school
[16:43] (1003.24s)
is requiring it or not unfortunately if
[16:45] (1005.20s)
we look at kind of the the past couple
[16:47] (1007.00s)
years the results as far as if a school
[16:49] (1009.08s)
is going to be test required or kind of
[16:51] (1011.36s)
test optional or um you know test blind
[16:54] (1014.68s)
the changes don't necessarily happen
[16:56] (1016.36s)
until the summer right now
[16:59] (1019.48s)
because of that right you don't want to
[17:01] (1021.44s)
be in a position where it's like you're
[17:02] (1022.80s)
scrambling to sign up for a test in
[17:04] (1024.48s)
August you're scrambling to try to take
[17:06] (1026.28s)
the test before your early action early
[17:08] (1028.08s)
decisions are there right so I always
[17:10] (1030.40s)
tell students right if you have finished
[17:12] (1032.48s)
math 3 or Algebra 2 trig then you should
[17:15] (1035.52s)
find a place to take a fulllength
[17:17] (1037.72s)
diagnostic test under test conditions
[17:20] (1040.76s)
when I when I when I say under test
[17:22] (1042.64s)
conditions I want it to be timed I don't
[17:24] (1044.52s)
want you to just kind of like you know
[17:26] (1046.20s)
very you know you know just uh kind of
[17:29] (1049.64s)
in a relaxed State just like kind of oh
[17:31] (1051.28s)
I'll take a little bit I'm going to go
[17:32] (1052.32s)
eat lunch come back do this no you have
[17:34] (1054.32s)
to take it all in one sitting all at one
[17:36] (1056.20s)
time that's what we know that's when
[17:38] (1058.44s)
that's how we can figure out exactly
[17:39] (1059.76s)
what your score looks like okay now a
[17:42] (1062.84s)
lot of people like they might live in
[17:44] (1064.52s)
areas where there's not a lot of kind of
[17:46] (1066.00s)
test prep or tutoring available right
[17:48] (1068.44s)
that's okay there's a lot of stuff
[17:49] (1069.96s)
online right and the test is digital so
[17:51] (1071.84s)
that's fine right but what I tell
[17:54] (1074.48s)
students is I don't want you to take it
[17:56] (1076.80s)
at home right your bed room is very very
[18:01] (1081.00s)
comfortable for you right when you are
[18:03] (1083.00s)
comfortable you do better on tests right
[18:05] (1085.60s)
so if you are going to take it kind of
[18:07] (1087.72s)
on your own I do suggest you go
[18:09] (1089.56s)
somewhere a little bit foreign whether
[18:11] (1091.28s)
it's a library that has a quiet room
[18:13] (1093.56s)
right or maybe mom or dad's office that
[18:15] (1095.88s)
has like a like a little cubicle that
[18:17] (1097.52s)
you can take the test in whatever it is
[18:19] (1099.68s)
you do need to take it somewhere that is
[18:21] (1101.60s)
not familiar to you okay then we can
[18:24] (1104.16s)
figure out what the test strategy is to
[18:26] (1106.08s)
get you to your goal score right now
[18:28] (1108.32s)
just a little kind of tidbit or Pro tip
[18:30] (1110.56s)
of information is this okay so for every
[18:34] (1114.52s)
100 Point increase right and a 100 Point
[18:36] (1116.68s)
increase is like a two-point increase on
[18:38] (1118.84s)
the the act just roughly speaking right
[18:42] (1122.36s)
um in that situation we usually suggest
[18:45] (1125.56s)
that a student study between 20 and 30
[18:47] (1127.64s)
hours and do three practice tests okay
[18:50] (1130.84s)
so if you if you're starting at a 13300
[18:52] (1132.96s)
and you're trying to get to a 1500 you
[18:54] (1134.36s)
multiply that by two right so 40 to 60
[18:57] (1137.12s)
hours six practice tests right if you're
[18:59] (1139.32s)
trying to get a 300 Point increase so on
[19:01] (1141.16s)
and so forth okay so testing is
[19:03] (1143.40s)
something that you might need to be
[19:04] (1144.60s)
thinking about right now right now I
[19:06] (1146.88s)
know a lot of families just blindly sign
[19:08] (1148.84s)
up for a test it's like oh we might need
[19:10] (1150.16s)
the SAT so we're going to sign up that
[19:11] (1151.88s)
is not the way to do it what's the point
[19:14] (1154.00s)
of doing that right you're it's like
[19:15] (1155.92s)
walking into a math test you never
[19:17] (1157.32s)
studied for right hoping that it goes
[19:19] (1159.68s)
well usually it doesn't Okay so again
[19:22] (1162.44s)
take that practice test see what you
[19:23] (1163.92s)
need to do see how much time you need
[19:25] (1165.60s)
and then figure out your testing
[19:27] (1167.12s)
strategy
[19:29] (1169.36s)
the third piece that I want to talk
[19:30] (1170.64s)
about when it comes to admissions is
[19:32] (1172.16s)
letters of recommendation right starting
[19:34] (1174.48s)
early is great in this situation right
[19:37] (1177.64s)
so for our Rising seniors we suggest
[19:40] (1180.20s)
that students reach out to their
[19:41] (1181.44s)
teachers to ask them before the end of
[19:44] (1184.40s)
junior year now a lot of parents are
[19:47] (1187.44s)
going to be like oh well like some
[19:48] (1188.44s)
teachers are already asking right um or
[19:50] (1190.64s)
some teachers are already full so on and
[19:52] (1192.24s)
so forth right so it does have kind of
[19:55] (1195.28s)
you know there are variations depending
[19:57] (1197.28s)
on school and teacher and things like
[19:58] (1198.48s)
that but generally speaking if you ask
[20:00] (1200.68s)
before the end of junior year most most
[20:03] (1203.04s)
kind of teachers still have spaces left
[20:05] (1205.96s)
okay now in a perfect world
[20:08] (1208.88s)
right this is what we' love to see one
[20:11] (1211.64s)
stem teacher one Humanities teacher or
[20:14] (1214.28s)
social science teacher okay that's what
[20:16] (1216.48s)
we would love to have right but right
[20:20] (1220.44s)
there's always a but right but it is
[20:22] (1222.88s)
about who knows you best and who you
[20:24] (1224.76s)
have the best relationship with right
[20:27] (1227.24s)
now I always hear these stories oh my
[20:29] (1229.12s)
gosh you know what I'm not really that
[20:30] (1230.36s)
close with my English teacher but I
[20:31] (1231.88s)
heard that she writes great letters of
[20:34] (1234.52s)
recommendation really how do the people
[20:37] (1237.16s)
know because you actually have to sign
[20:38] (1238.80s)
something on the Common App or whatever
[20:41] (1241.20s)
app you're using that says you wave your
[20:43] (1243.64s)
right to actually see your letter letter
[20:45] (1245.64s)
of recommendation and not many teachers
[20:48] (1248.16s)
actually say hey this is what I wrote on
[20:49] (1249.56s)
your recommendation letter and hand it
[20:51] (1251.24s)
to you right so everyone that says oh
[20:53] (1253.64s)
yeah you know Mrs B writes great letters
[20:55] (1255.88s)
of recommendation I don't know how they
[20:58] (1258.04s)
know okay so it's about who you have the
[21:01] (1261.16s)
strongest bond with who you've had the
[21:02] (1262.80s)
most interaction with that is kind of
[21:05] (1265.04s)
the key kind of piece here right now
[21:08] (1268.08s)
some colleges and Majors will have
[21:10] (1270.48s)
specific requirements that might be met
[21:12] (1272.52s)
right MIT Georgetown those are some
[21:14] (1274.76s)
schools that do have specific
[21:16] (1276.24s)
requirements if you have one stem
[21:17] (1277.76s)
teacher one Humanity social science
[21:19] (1279.44s)
teacher though that actually would work
[21:21] (1281.80s)
for those schools as well
[21:25] (1285.12s)
okay uh we have a question here and it
[21:27] (1287.04s)
says can we use the same two teachers
[21:28] (1288.36s)
for all the apps and the answer to this
[21:30] (1290.92s)
is yes you can right so it's not like
[21:33] (1293.44s)
they write a separate letter for each
[21:35] (1295.20s)
one right so your school might use
[21:37] (1297.52s)
something like navian right or Aries or
[21:40] (1300.60s)
you know or Squire or this or that
[21:42] (1302.96s)
whatever it is right but basically what
[21:44] (1304.72s)
happens is that the teacher will upload
[21:47] (1307.00s)
their letter one time right and then you
[21:50] (1310.12s)
tell them which schools you're applying
[21:51] (1311.60s)
to and then it gets sent to all of those
[21:53] (1313.60s)
schools right through that system right
[21:55] (1315.92s)
that's how it happens right so don't
[21:57] (1317.96s)
feel bad right that you're asking your
[21:59] (1319.84s)
teacher to write a letter of
[22:00] (1320.84s)
recommendation for 17 different colleges
[22:03] (1323.12s)
they're only writing one letter so you
[22:04] (1324.76s)
don't really need to worry about it okay
[22:07] (1327.72s)
uh the other kind of question that we
[22:09] (1329.64s)
always get asked about letters of
[22:10] (1330.88s)
recommendation is this right well uh
[22:14] (1334.56s)
Princeton allows five should I get five
[22:18] (1338.28s)
teachers no you shouldn't right um
[22:22] (1342.20s)
because if the teachers are going to be
[22:23] (1343.88s)
saying roughly the same thing they don't
[22:26] (1346.04s)
it doesn't need to be beaten into the
[22:27] (1347.64s)
admissions office officers um kind of
[22:30] (1350.28s)
Minds five different times right um so
[22:34] (1354.60s)
maybe you have two right teacher
[22:36] (1356.64s)
recommendations right and then some
[22:38] (1358.32s)
schools also do allow for additional
[22:40] (1360.36s)
recom recommenders right those
[22:42] (1362.20s)
additional recommenders might be kind of
[22:44] (1364.12s)
like a religious leader of the religion
[22:46] (1366.52s)
that you that you follow right it might
[22:48] (1368.68s)
be a coach or an arts teacher right um
[22:51] (1371.84s)
it might be a mentor or an employer
[22:54] (1374.92s)
right uh we want to see something
[22:56] (1376.60s)
different right the college application
[22:58] (1378.68s)
is about us trying to show as many
[23:00] (1380.84s)
different facets of who we are as a
[23:02] (1382.64s)
student to the admissions officers if we
[23:05] (1385.72s)
show them the same thing five times it
[23:08] (1388.72s)
doesn't really add to our score okay now
[23:11] (1391.96s)
we have another question in the Q&A and
[23:13] (1393.60s)
it says do 's accept letters of
[23:15] (1395.84s)
recommendation right and the answer
[23:18] (1398.64s)
surprisingly is yes but again there is a
[23:21] (1401.76s)
qualifier right the qualifier is that
[23:24] (1404.44s)
it's By Invitation Only and we've only
[23:27] (1407.40s)
seen it from Berkeley okay that's it
[23:30] (1410.88s)
Berkeley is the only school that's ever
[23:32] (1412.20s)
asked for additional kind of
[23:33] (1413.72s)
recommendation letters right so it's
[23:35] (1415.36s)
usually when students are kind of neck
[23:36] (1416.72s)
and neck right and they're having a hard
[23:38] (1418.44s)
time choose they want a little bit more
[23:40] (1420.32s)
information about the student to make
[23:42] (1422.08s)
their final decision okay so that's why
[23:45] (1425.52s)
we always tell students one of the
[23:46] (1426.76s)
things that we kind of tell them is you
[23:49] (1429.72s)
need to be checking your email because
[23:51] (1431.36s)
if Berkeley emails you and says hey we
[23:53] (1433.40s)
want this extra piece of information and
[23:55] (1435.76s)
you don't check your email and it's
[23:57] (1437.72s)
sitting there and then it never it goes
[23:59] (1439.28s)
unanswered they're kind of they're going
[24:00] (1440.80s)
to be kind of like well I guess they
[24:02] (1442.28s)
don't really want to come here anymore
[24:03] (1443.96s)
right that's what's going to happen so
[24:05] (1445.52s)
make sure that you're checking your
[24:09] (1449.08s)
okay uh we have a question that again
[24:11] (1451.92s)
along the same lines with the
[24:13] (1453.00s)
recommendation so I'll answer it here it
[24:14] (1454.80s)
says both of my son's Math teachers uh
[24:17] (1457.16s)
that he had are retiring this year could
[24:19] (1459.08s)
he ask them for letters of
[24:20] (1460.48s)
recommendation the answer is yes and no
[24:23] (1463.12s)
right so can he ask them for a letter
[24:24] (1464.96s)
yeah he definitely can right the problem
[24:27] (1467.96s)
is is if your school is on a system like
[24:30] (1470.40s)
Squire like Aries like navian this and
[24:35] (1475.08s)
that right because once they retire
[24:37] (1477.44s)
their email is gone they don't have
[24:39] (1479.28s)
access to navian anymore so it is
[24:41] (1481.60s)
something that you'll have to ask your
[24:43] (1483.80s)
kind of counselor about right um to see
[24:46] (1486.72s)
if they will still have access to do
[24:48] (1488.44s)
those things now generally speaking I
[24:51] (1491.80s)
will say this right um when teachers
[24:54] (1494.60s)
retire they kind of uh float off into
[24:56] (1496.80s)
the sunset they don't want to do
[24:58] (1498.08s)
anything thing related to school for a
[25:00] (1500.44s)
while right think about you know
[25:02] (1502.12s)
teaching students and writing recck
[25:03] (1503.40s)
letters for the past 35 years and then
[25:05] (1505.48s)
retiring oh man I don't know I might
[25:08] (1508.12s)
want to take a one season off right so
[25:11] (1511.40s)
um again it is something that you need
[25:13] (1513.40s)
to ask your school about if your school
[25:15] (1515.76s)
is using like just if they're just going
[25:18] (1518.32s)
through the Common App for
[25:19] (1519.44s)
recommendation letters which again not
[25:21] (1521.44s)
very many schools do right they do have
[25:23] (1523.36s)
some kind of system right some portal
[25:25] (1525.20s)
for students right um if they are then
[25:27] (1527.80s)
it's a little bit easier but if they are
[25:30] (1530.00s)
on a navon squire Aries type of system
[25:33] (1533.68s)
it's a little bit more difficult right
[25:34] (1534.96s)
you're going to have to talk to your
[25:35] (1535.72s)
counselor about the ins and outs of that
[25:38] (1538.28s)
okay but great questions I really
[25:40] (1540.60s)
appreciate them right so let's kind of
[25:42] (1542.48s)
continue on right and kind of talk about
[25:44] (1544.60s)
kind of the admissions todos right so
[25:48] (1548.20s)
here's the first thing you need to make
[25:49] (1549.72s)
sure that you're ending this year off
[25:51] (1551.84s)
strong right again last full transcript
[25:53] (1553.64s)
that many colleges will see right if
[25:55] (1555.44s)
you've had hiccups you want to make sure
[25:56] (1556.92s)
that you show great Improvement and
[25:58] (1558.76s)
Trends right for testing make sure you
[26:01] (1561.88s)
do don't just jump into testing right
[26:03] (1563.92s)
prepare and figure out what you need to
[26:05] (1565.28s)
do to get to your goal right um and kind
[26:08] (1568.00s)
of see what the different you know uh
[26:10] (1570.00s)
averages are at the schools that you're
[26:11] (1571.48s)
applying to right and then letters of
[26:13] (1573.48s)
wreck ask early make sure to check up
[26:16] (1576.04s)
right like we showed you on the previous
[26:17] (1577.56s)
slide right oh one thing I kind of got
[26:19] (1579.52s)
sidetracked on I'm going to go back real
[26:21] (1581.24s)
quick right so for letters of wreck this
[26:23] (1583.36s)
is the timeline of how we want you to do
[26:25] (1585.72s)
things you ask them in person before the
[26:29] (1589.04s)
end of the year right once you get home
[26:31] (1591.96s)
from asking them and then saying yes
[26:34] (1594.36s)
right obviously they could say no as
[26:35] (1595.88s)
well right but if they do say yes right
[26:38] (1598.52s)
then you go home write them an email
[26:40] (1600.48s)
have a great summer right Mr Mrs a right
[26:44] (1604.32s)
um you know I will be in touch you know
[26:46] (1606.64s)
kind of you know closer to the closer to
[26:48] (1608.76s)
the fall right then maybe about a week
[26:51] (1611.40s)
before school starts you send them
[26:52] (1612.72s)
another email saying I just wanted you
[26:54] (1614.64s)
to remind you of our conversation right
[26:56] (1616.52s)
most of our students apply early action
[26:58] (1618.24s)
early decision right you bring that up
[27:00] (1620.00s)
saying I'm most likely going to apply
[27:01] (1621.36s)
early action early decision somewhere
[27:03] (1623.08s)
right and so like this would probably be
[27:05] (1625.08s)
my first deadline what do you need from
[27:07] (1627.40s)
me okay now most I'm not expecting the
[27:09] (1629.64s)
teachers to respond like while Summer's
[27:11] (1631.64s)
still going on but you get in their
[27:14] (1634.36s)
inbox right then after you're in their
[27:16] (1636.60s)
inbox school starts and then you know
[27:19] (1639.24s)
maybe like the first two weeks of school
[27:21] (1641.16s)
you stop by that teachers like office
[27:23] (1643.40s)
hours right or during lunchtime just to
[27:25] (1645.32s)
say hi right show your face right and be
[27:28] (1648.04s)
like yeah so I sent you an email a
[27:29] (1649.64s)
couple weeks ago you know about this
[27:31] (1651.04s)
about that right uh what do you need me
[27:32] (1652.84s)
to do right you want to be proactive
[27:35] (1655.08s)
about this you don't want to kind of
[27:36] (1656.08s)
just sit back and wait until your your
[27:38] (1658.08s)
school senior night because for a lot of
[27:39] (1659.88s)
schools the school senior night like is
[27:41] (1661.92s)
at the end of September or early October
[27:44] (1664.44s)
right but sometimes that's a little bit
[27:46] (1666.12s)
too late in the cycle for teachers to be
[27:48] (1668.92s)
ready by by November 1st which is the
[27:51] (1671.32s)
early action early decision deadline for
[27:53] (1673.24s)
a lot of schools okay so keep that
[27:55] (1675.80s)
timeline in mind right so like like
[27:57] (1677.80s)
maybe May right and then August right
[28:01] (1681.44s)
and then first week of school that is
[28:04] (1684.40s)
that should be kind of the timeline that
[28:05] (1685.64s)
you're thinking about okay with that I
[28:09] (1689.04s)
do want to jump to financial aid make
[28:10] (1690.52s)
sure that we have stuff there oh I took
[28:11] (1691.72s)
a lot of time here right because I was
[28:12] (1692.84s)
answering questions but I'll try to
[28:13] (1693.84s)
speed through this as quickly as
[28:15] (1695.12s)
possible okay so I want to make sure
[28:17] (1697.04s)
that families understand the financial
[28:18] (1698.44s)
aid process okay so the first thing is
[28:21] (1701.36s)
what is financial aid right so financial
[28:23] (1703.56s)
aid is any money that is given to
[28:25] (1705.20s)
students in order to make College more
[28:26] (1706.80s)
affordable right whether that's grants
[28:28] (1708.72s)
scholarships work study institutional
[28:30] (1710.88s)
aid departmental aid or loans they call
[28:32] (1712.68s)
it a lot of different things but I kind
[28:35] (1715.40s)
of just break it up into two different
[28:37] (1717.52s)
kind of categories there's free money
[28:39] (1719.84s)
that you never need to pay back and
[28:41] (1721.44s)
there are loans right
[28:43] (1723.56s)
now I don't like loans right uh because
[28:47] (1727.04s)
well you have to pay interest on them
[28:48] (1728.88s)
right um but for some situations it is
[28:52] (1732.72s)
needed I get it right but the one thing
[28:55] (1735.12s)
I'll say about loans and we'll kind of
[28:56] (1736.32s)
go over this kind of later on in the
[28:57] (1737.64s)
fall as well but not all loans are
[28:59] (1739.72s)
created equal you might be able to find
[29:01] (1741.44s)
a better interest rate at your bank
[29:03] (1743.76s)
right for educational loans or student
[29:05] (1745.28s)
loans or at a different bank right or a
[29:07] (1747.48s)
different institution the government
[29:10] (1750.44s)
kind of interest rate for students is
[29:12] (1752.92s)
6.53% that's for this year the interest
[29:16] (1756.00s)
rate for parent loans right if parents
[29:17] (1757.72s)
take the money out it is
[29:19] (1759.56s)
9.08% right it is not a great interest
[29:21] (1761.88s)
rate right but I am trying to get you
[29:24] (1764.92s)
guys more free money so that you don't
[29:27] (1767.24s)
have to take loans okay that is the
[29:29] (1769.08s)
whole point of why I'm here okay now the
[29:32] (1772.04s)
first step in this process is FAFSA okay
[29:35] (1775.80s)
now I I hear this so much that it like
[29:38] (1778.44s)
kind of haunts me while I sleep right A
[29:41] (1781.08s)
lot of people said say we didn't get
[29:43] (1783.04s)
anything from
[29:44] (1784.12s)
FAFSA you're you're completely correct
[29:46] (1786.60s)
because most families don't get anything
[29:48] (1788.36s)
from FAFSA 90% of people that fill out
[29:51] (1791.32s)
the FAFSA are not getting their money
[29:53] (1793.24s)
from there right the FAFSA is a form
[29:55] (1795.56s)
that you fill out it's like a credit
[29:56] (1796.88s)
check you have to fill it out in order
[29:58] (1798.88s)
to get a credit card right so the FAFSA
[30:02] (1802.88s)
just think of it as a form you're not
[30:04] (1804.68s)
getting anything from here it's just a
[30:06] (1806.20s)
form that you have to fill out to move
[30:07] (1807.96s)
to step two of the process okay now the
[30:11] (1811.00s)
FAFSA right the open date for the class
[30:13] (1813.56s)
of 2025 was delayed by two months okay
[30:17] (1817.12s)
but for the class of 2026 I hope that it
[30:19] (1819.76s)
will remain at the normal date of
[30:22] (1822.08s)
October 1st but am I hopeful that that
[30:24] (1824.56s)
is going to happen probably not right um
[30:27] (1827.68s)
so whether you're applying to Public
[30:29] (1829.64s)
Schools private schools out of state
[30:31] (1831.36s)
colleges this is the first step of the
[30:33] (1833.88s)
process right I I I just met with like
[30:36] (1836.76s)
three families la like kind of like late
[30:39] (1839.20s)
last week and they're like yeah we
[30:41] (1841.00s)
didn't really fill anything out because
[30:42] (1842.12s)
we didn't think we're were going to get
[30:43] (1843.00s)
anything and then we saw your training
[30:44] (1844.64s)
and then realized that we probably
[30:45] (1845.72s)
should have filled things out and I was
[30:46] (1846.96s)
like great right um and so we had to
[30:50] (1850.80s)
have a couple emergency meetings in
[30:52] (1852.84s)
order to try to get things figured out
[30:55] (1855.56s)
okay um but again like I said said I I
[30:58] (1858.72s)
will be having emergency meetings
[31:00] (1860.44s)
tonight as well if people need them okay
[31:03] (1863.48s)
I already see one person in my inbox
[31:05] (1865.44s)
right now that's like can we meet
[31:07] (1867.20s)
tonight right so unfortunately I will be
[31:09] (1869.76s)
working later than I thought I was going
[31:11] (1871.16s)
to but that's okay right I want to make
[31:12] (1872.96s)
sure that you guys are taking care of
[31:14] (1874.56s)
okay and again for those that say we're
[31:16] (1876.68s)
not going to qualify right we're not
[31:18] (1878.20s)
going to get anything right well if you
[31:20] (1880.56s)
don't turn in this form that's going to
[31:21] (1881.96s)
be the case 100% of the time right but
[31:23] (1883.76s)
there are things that you can do to help
[31:25] (1885.68s)
your situation okay
[31:28] (1888.68s)
now let us kind of talk about what you
[31:30] (1890.60s)
would need to fill it out okay so a lot
[31:32] (1892.60s)
of this information is stuff you already
[31:33] (1893.88s)
know right so you'll need your
[31:36] (1896.08s)
appropriate year tax return the tax
[31:38] (1898.52s)
return that will be needed for the 2020
[31:41] (1901.04s)
class of 2026 will be the kind of uh
[31:46] (1906.28s)
that will be the 2024 tax return it's
[31:48] (1908.12s)
from two years ago right you'll also
[31:49] (1909.96s)
need to know your social security number
[31:52] (1912.48s)
right an email that you regularly check
[31:55] (1915.32s)
right and that also doesn't just
[31:57] (1917.12s)
automatically spam stuff right uh you
[31:59] (1919.96s)
need a unique email right for the
[32:03] (1923.20s)
student and for the parent right so you
[32:05] (1925.08s)
need separate emails right you also need
[32:07] (1927.64s)
a phone number that can receive text
[32:09] (1929.44s)
messages right again distinct numbers
[32:11] (1931.72s)
one for the parent one for the student
[32:13] (1933.80s)
okay so again these are some of the
[32:16] (1936.28s)
things that you'll need in order to fill
[32:17] (1937.72s)
it out right and again this is a very
[32:20] (1940.12s)
brief summary right the next step if you
[32:22] (1942.72s)
are applying to some private schools
[32:24] (1944.48s)
right or even some out of state public
[32:25] (1945.88s)
schools do require this right is the CSS
[32:28] (1948.40s)
profile right now what is the CSS
[32:31] (1951.28s)
profile the CSS profile is is a acronym
[32:34] (1954.68s)
for the college scholarship search
[32:36] (1956.40s)
profile right it's used by almost 400
[32:38] (1958.48s)
institutions in the United States and
[32:40] (1960.16s)
it's to find nuggets of money at the
[32:42] (1962.72s)
colleges right that you're applying to
[32:45] (1965.28s)
that can you know that you are kind of
[32:48] (1968.48s)
eligible for right so again right it is
[32:54] (1974.04s)
a form that is kind of like there to
[32:55] (1975.96s)
help you right but it's also Al a form
[32:59] (1979.00s)
that is there to kind of like try to
[33:00] (1980.76s)
block as many people as possible right
[33:02] (1982.92s)
it's another step in trying to
[33:04] (1984.28s)
disqualify you from getting Aid right
[33:06] (1986.52s)
now I put this in there right it's like
[33:08] (1988.84s)
I'll show you how deep they try to get
[33:10] (1990.56s)
into your life right and again they do
[33:12] (1992.92s)
really get deep into your life right
[33:14] (1994.72s)
again here's the website for it it is
[33:16] (1996.84s)
linked to your College Board college
[33:18] (1998.40s)
board is something that you might be a
[33:19] (1999.48s)
little bit more familiar with if your
[33:20] (2000.92s)
students taking an AP test or an SAT or
[33:23] (2003.04s)
the PSAT they have a c like a college
[33:25] (2005.84s)
board account already it is linked to
[33:27] (2007.96s)
your college board account okay now here
[33:30] (2010.64s)
are the different things they ask for
[33:32] (2012.16s)
personal information parental
[33:33] (2013.52s)
information those things are pretty
[33:34] (2014.68s)
normal right they also ask for your
[33:36] (2016.40s)
housing information they ask how much
[33:38] (2018.00s)
your mortgage is or your rent is right
[33:40] (2020.20s)
they also ask about people living in
[33:41] (2021.40s)
your house right they ask about academic
[33:43] (2023.08s)
information parent details right they'll
[33:45] (2025.36s)
ask if you're remarried you know
[33:46] (2026.92s)
separated kind of those are kind of
[33:48] (2028.08s)
basic but when it comes to parent income
[33:50] (2030.64s)
right they're going to ask about the the
[33:52] (2032.68s)
wages you make they're also going to ask
[33:54] (2034.52s)
about kind of other income you make from
[33:56] (2036.48s)
different Investments or kind of like
[33:58] (2038.20s)
rental properties things like that
[33:59] (2039.84s)
they're also going to ask about child
[34:01] (2041.20s)
support they're going to ask about
[34:02] (2042.64s)
housing information they're going to
[34:03] (2043.72s)
about ask about assets right they're
[34:05] (2045.64s)
going to ask about your retirement right
[34:07] (2047.64s)
and here's one of the things I always
[34:09] (2049.12s)
tell parents your retirement is for you
[34:12] (2052.04s)
right you are not paying into your
[34:13] (2053.96s)
retirement to pay for your kids's
[34:15] (2055.52s)
college right so I don't know why
[34:17] (2057.60s)
colleges are asking about it right in
[34:19] (2059.92s)
this in this world where it's like kind
[34:21] (2061.28s)
of like everyone for themselves right
[34:23] (2063.36s)
everyone kind of like you know um get
[34:25] (2065.56s)
your piece of you know the American pie
[34:28] (2068.40s)
I don't know why they're looking at
[34:29] (2069.88s)
parents' assets to pay for college right
[34:32] (2072.80s)
they're also going to ask about expenses
[34:34] (2074.48s)
they're going to ask about you know
[34:35] (2075.84s)
household summaries they're also going
[34:37] (2077.44s)
to ask about student income and student
[34:39] (2079.20s)
assets right one of the things I go over
[34:41] (2081.64s)
so many times throughout the year is
[34:43] (2083.84s)
that I understand that parents want to
[34:45] (2085.88s)
prepare students for the future right
[34:48] (2088.28s)
and they want to kind of you know
[34:49] (2089.88s)
utilize different Tax Strategies to
[34:51] (2091.76s)
bequeath things to their students right
[34:54] (2094.64s)
whether it be you know partial ownership
[34:56] (2096.44s)
of a house right or this that so on and
[34:58] (2098.36s)
so forth but student income and assets
[35:02] (2102.00s)
are seen at a they're seen as a kind of
[35:07] (2107.24s)
uh amount of money that can be pulled
[35:09] (2109.12s)
from more greedily by the colleges okay
[35:12] (2112.52s)
so it is something that you need to kind
[35:13] (2113.96s)
of keep in mind if you are planning on
[35:15] (2115.80s)
doing any of those things they'll also
[35:17] (2117.36s)
ask about special circumstances okay
[35:20] (2120.00s)
just to give you guys a rough estimate
[35:22] (2122.64s)
right the FAFSA has I believe 48
[35:25] (2125.12s)
questions that need to be answered right
[35:27] (2127.04s)
the CSS profile has about 200 okay so
[35:30] (2130.64s)
it's about five times as large right so
[35:32] (2132.80s)
keep that in mind there okay so as far
[35:36] (2136.12s)
as financial aid for juniors these are
[35:39] (2139.24s)
the things that need to get done parents
[35:41] (2141.52s)
right now we are 133 days away from the
[35:45] (2145.32s)
normal tax filing deadline right I
[35:50] (2150.28s)
know families that are signed up with me
[35:52] (2152.60s)
already realistically about 20% of them
[35:56] (2156.32s)
have actually filed their taxes the
[35:58] (2158.24s)
other 80% are families that usually file
[36:01] (2161.32s)
by October right but as I'm having the
[36:04] (2164.92s)
meeting with you one of the things I'm
[36:06] (2166.32s)
going to ask you to do is get it done by
[36:08] (2168.72s)
Late July or early August right now I
[36:12] (2172.60s)
know parents it's tough right you don't
[36:15] (2175.24s)
want to pay more taxes you don't want to
[36:16] (2176.88s)
do this you don't want to do that but
[36:18] (2178.20s)
unfortunately for this particular year
[36:20] (2180.40s)
it is something that you want to get
[36:22] (2182.52s)
done early right especially if you're
[36:24] (2184.80s)
going to be part of our program we need
[36:26] (2186.44s)
to get it done early so that we can look
[36:28] (2188.32s)
at your tax return and create a strategy
[36:30] (2190.64s)
that makes sense for your family okay
[36:33] (2193.56s)
but again parents this year you need to
[36:36] (2196.52s)
get it done ASAP right now another piece
[36:40] (2200.00s)
of the puzzle that I am going to tell
[36:41] (2201.80s)
parents and students that you need to
[36:43] (2203.12s)
check on is before the start of the
[36:45] (2205.40s)
financial aid process right so before
[36:47] (2207.08s)
the summer is out right and the reason I
[36:49] (2209.40s)
say before the summer is out because I
[36:50] (2210.68s)
want to make sure that you can change
[36:51] (2211.84s)
anything if you do need to change it at
[36:53] (2213.44s)
school and everything else right before
[36:55] (2215.96s)
the start of the financial aid process
[36:57] (2217.92s)
make sure that everyone's information is
[37:00] (2220.80s)
correct okay now you might be thinking
[37:04] (2224.28s)
what do you mean everyone's like names
[37:06] (2226.52s)
and stuff are correct right the one the
[37:08] (2228.40s)
things I'm most concerned about are your
[37:10] (2230.36s)
names and your Social Security numbers
[37:13] (2233.44s)
okay now let's say that your name right
[37:16] (2236.44s)
especially like my parents too right uh
[37:18] (2238.80s)
they were immigrants right the first
[37:20] (2240.96s)
time they got their social security
[37:21] (2241.92s)
cards like this is wrong right and so
[37:25] (2245.08s)
obviously I
[37:26] (2246.24s)
wasn't I was was very young at that
[37:28] (2248.16s)
point but they told me the story later
[37:29] (2249.80s)
right um the first time they got their
[37:31] (2251.40s)
social security cards the names were
[37:33] (2253.96s)
wrong but that's all they had so that's
[37:35] (2255.60s)
what they had to make their driver's
[37:36] (2256.60s)
license with this and that so on and so
[37:38] (2258.16s)
forth right and then they finally
[37:40] (2260.96s)
changed it and then their whole life was
[37:42] (2262.76s)
turned upside down because things
[37:44] (2264.00s)
changed right their credit cards weren't
[37:45] (2265.96s)
under their own name their license
[37:47] (2267.24s)
didn't match this and that so on and so
[37:48] (2268.84s)
forth a lot of things were problems
[37:51] (2271.00s)
right so you want to make sure that the
[37:53] (2273.56s)
spellings are correct right now spaces
[37:56] (2276.68s)
spaces have
[37:57] (2277.96s)
plagued me with problems throughout the
[38:00] (2280.56s)
course of my financial a career right A
[38:03] (2283.56s)
lot of people think that oh my name is
[38:05] (2285.36s)
like I don't know let's just say it's
[38:06] (2286.44s)
like a space b space c right and they
[38:10] (2290.48s)
think for the longest time that their
[38:11] (2291.76s)
middle name is B right but on their
[38:14] (2294.64s)
actual like legal documents their first
[38:16] (2296.72s)
name is actually a space b right so if
[38:20] (2300.28s)
you have spaces in your first name
[38:22] (2302.08s)
please make sure that it is done the
[38:24] (2304.84s)
correct way that's actually what
[38:26] (2306.36s)
happened to my parents right their first
[38:28] (2308.32s)
names are actually a space b but it's
[38:35] (2315.16s)
not anymore right their first name is
[38:37] (2317.60s)
just a and then their middle name has
[38:39] (2319.52s)
now been designated for the last how
[38:42] (2322.44s)
long has it been 40 something years as B
[38:45] (2325.52s)
right that's how their IDs were made so
[38:48] (2328.12s)
again let's take care of that right now
[38:50] (2330.08s)
the second part is social security
[38:51] (2331.88s)
numbers right now parents your own you
[38:55] (2335.96s)
probably memorized by heart right right
[38:57] (2337.60s)
you have to use it here there you use it
[38:59] (2339.64s)
all the time so you you're fine right
[39:01] (2341.68s)
when you're signing up for that Home
[39:02] (2342.84s)
Depot kind of you know uh credit card
[39:05] (2345.32s)
when you're buying that new fridge right
[39:06] (2346.80s)
you use it right but students right how
[39:10] (2350.20s)
many parents can say that they memorize
[39:11] (2351.92s)
their students social security number by
[39:13] (2353.80s)
heart right do not right and also I will
[39:17] (2357.16s)
say this one more thing your tax return
[39:19] (2359.72s)
is not a kind of like indisputable piece
[39:23] (2363.32s)
of evidence that tells you what your
[39:25] (2365.60s)
student's social security number is
[39:27] (2367.64s)
right I had a family right they had
[39:30] (2370.24s)
sworn that this was their student social
[39:32] (2372.68s)
security number they had been filing
[39:34] (2374.92s)
taxes and you know the the student as a
[39:37] (2377.08s)
dependent for the last you know 16 17
[39:39] (2379.48s)
years right only to find that when we
[39:42] (2382.32s)
tried to do the FAFSA the the social
[39:44] (2384.76s)
that they provided to me on their tax
[39:46] (2386.36s)
returns did not match and the the the
[39:49] (2389.24s)
the IRS was not able to match the
[39:50] (2390.96s)
students information to the Social
[39:53] (2393.16s)
Security number so I had them dig into
[39:55] (2395.64s)
that you know into that baby binder to
[39:57] (2397.88s)
find a social security card and they
[39:59] (2399.48s)
were on digigit off for 17 years they
[40:02] (2402.52s)
had been using someone else's social
[40:04] (2404.20s)
security number okay so please make sure
[40:07] (2407.00s)
to check actual documents from the
[40:09] (2409.76s)
government like your social security
[40:11] (2411.28s)
card to make sure that your social
[40:13] (2413.00s)
security number is correct okay now just
[40:17] (2417.16s)
to brag a little bit about our program
[40:19] (2419.00s)
why are we different well we're
[40:21] (2421.04s)
different because we take you as you are
[40:23] (2423.48s)
we don't ask you to try to lower your
[40:25] (2425.16s)
income by you know buying life insurance
[40:27] (2427.52s)
policies or tax deferred annuities right
[40:30] (2430.08s)
we don't say that your student needs to
[40:31] (2431.36s)
have a 4.5 or like a 1550 on their SATs
[40:34] (2434.36s)
right we also don't force you to apply
[40:36] (2436.24s)
to colleges right that you would never
[40:38] (2438.08s)
go to I know a lot of other companies do
[40:40] (2440.96s)
right and so right I tell families we
[40:44] (2444.08s)
have free consultations we never charge
[40:46] (2446.20s)
right we talk to you if we can help you
[40:48] (2448.16s)
I'll let you know if I can't help you
[40:50] (2450.04s)
I'll give you some tips and tricks and
[40:51] (2451.40s)
then hopefully that helps you out in
[40:52] (2452.60s)
some way or another right but if I have
[40:54] (2454.84s)
deemed that I cannot help you there's
[40:56] (2456.76s)
probably not a good chance for your
[40:58] (2458.48s)
family right um but I'd probably say for
[41:01] (2461.24s)
85% of families that come to me there is
[41:03] (2463.52s)
something that we can do for you so
[41:04] (2464.88s)
please sign up for that consultation
[41:07] (2467.28s)
okay now again to brag a little bit more
[41:10] (2470.80s)
our recent results right this is a
[41:13] (2473.12s)
student that is headed to Chapman we
[41:15] (2475.92s)
were able to get them $30,000 there
[41:17] (2477.72s)
right again the the kind of like stats
[41:19] (2479.88s)
of the family the financial stats are
[41:21] (2481.40s)
there on the left right but they also
[41:23] (2483.08s)
got $35,000 from forom we are also able
[41:25] (2485.44s)
to get them $37,000 from University of
[41:27] (2487.32s)
San Diego right this student right
[41:31] (2491.04s)
family income was at 230,000 right we
[41:33] (2493.32s)
were able to basically get them about
[41:35] (2495.48s)
25,000 to
[41:37] (2497.12s)
$28,000 uh at the uc's right across the
[41:40] (2500.36s)
board across all of them right Santa CLA
[41:42] (2502.64s)
they got $677,000 right LMU they got
[41:45] (2505.08s)
$70,000 right so again very great result
[41:48] (2508.28s)
for this family right they're going to
[41:49] (2509.64s)
school for you know Pennies on the
[41:51] (2511.04s)
dollar right this family went to Baylor
[41:54] (2514.24s)
right incomes at around 440 roughly
[41:56] (2516.52s)
speaking they own their own home they
[41:57] (2517.92s)
have other businesses and properties and
[41:59] (2519.84s)
the offer that we were able to get from
[42:01] (2521.32s)
Baylor was $42,000 a year right so even
[42:04] (2524.96s)
for higher income families we have been
[42:06] (2526.88s)
able to get great results okay so
[42:09] (2529.60s)
hopefully your family is the next right
[42:11] (2531.80s)
now I do want to make sure that we open
[42:13] (2533.72s)
it up for Q&A right so if you do have
[42:16] (2536.80s)
questions go ahead and you know put them
[42:19] (2539.20s)
in the Q&A put them in chat right and as
[42:21] (2541.28s)
you guys are doing that I do want to
[42:22] (2542.56s)
make sure that you guys have all these
[42:24] (2544.40s)
links right these QR codes are take you
[42:26] (2546.84s)
direct direct ly to the pages where you
[42:28] (2548.16s)
can book a financial aid consultation or
[42:30] (2550.88s)
kind of reach out to our our coaching uh
[42:33] (2553.56s)
program um so that they can answer
[42:35] (2555.68s)
questions about either the college
[42:36] (2556.96s)
application intensive or a more
[42:38] (2558.80s)
long-term coaching program for you right
[42:40] (2560.92s)
so if you are interested in financial
[42:42] (2562.44s)
aid you can use a QR code you can also
[42:44] (2564.92s)
text 94977
[42:47] (2567.24s)
5865 you can text at money and then
[42:49] (2569.76s)
we'll provide you kind of information
[42:51] (2571.32s)
about our program we'll also help you
[42:52] (2572.96s)
sign up for a call right if you're
[42:54] (2574.84s)
interested in our coaching programs or
[42:56] (2576.24s)
the college application ensive again QR
[42:58] (2578.60s)
code or text College to 94977
[43:04] (2584.88s)
okay all
[43:06] (2586.84s)
right I did a lot of talking today I had
[43:09] (2589.52s)
a longer than normal one because I I you
[43:11] (2591.24s)
know we're kind of doing a combo thing
[43:12] (2592.60s)
here but I do want to open it up for
[43:15] (2595.12s)
kind of questions right so I will kind
[43:17] (2597.96s)
of let you guys kind of put those out
[43:19] (2599.72s)
there I will also go ahead and put the
[43:21] (2601.84s)
link for the financial aid consultation
[43:27] (2607.32s)
the chat here okay uh so that you guys
[43:29] (2609.92s)
have three different ways of contacting
[43:31] (2611.40s)
us so you have no excuse okay so again
[43:34] (2614.64s)
if there are questions please put them
[43:36] (2616.04s)
in the Q&A or in the chat please
[43:46] (2626.84s)
okay okay so we have a question here it
[43:48] (2628.84s)
says what is the key to getting
[43:50] (2630.00s)
relatively larger financial aid packages
[43:52] (2632.92s)
uh for higher income families like your
[43:54] (2634.20s)
Baylor example so there's a lot of
[43:56] (2636.32s)
different pieces the puzzle right now I
[43:59] (2639.00s)
live in California right living in
[44:01] (2641.12s)
California definitely has its perks well
[44:03] (2643.32s)
I mean less perks nowadays the weather's
[44:05] (2645.12s)
a little funky right um but uh with
[44:08] (2648.96s)
living in California one of the things
[44:10] (2650.48s)
that happens is that you have a higher
[44:11] (2651.80s)
cost of living right now if you know a
[44:15] (2655.40s)
family that makes $400,000 and lives in
[44:17] (2657.84s)
Wisconsin right or Montana or Texas
[44:20] (2660.76s)
right versus a family that makes
[44:21] (2661.92s)
$400,000 in California there's a lot of
[44:24] (2664.56s)
differences income tax differences right
[44:27] (2667.56s)
uh California has one of the highest
[44:28] (2668.96s)
income tax rates right uh cost of living
[44:32] (2672.20s)
differences right so those are all
[44:34] (2674.48s)
things that we we take into account to
[44:36] (2676.04s)
try to explain to the school that hey
[44:38] (2678.04s)
Baylor costs 90 $93,000 a year we cannot
[44:41] (2681.68s)
afford that right even if we make
[44:43] (2683.84s)
$400,000 right so there's different
[44:45] (2685.72s)
pieces that we work on on the FAFSA on
[44:47] (2687.28s)
the CSS profile right on different
[44:49] (2689.60s)
additional forums that are turned into
[44:51] (2691.44s)
Bor to give them that picture and help
[44:54] (2694.00s)
them understand that $93,000 is not a a
[44:57] (2697.24s)
financial possibility for our family
[45:00] (2700.40s)
okay but everyone's situation is very
[45:02] (2702.12s)
different right um and so that's why we
[45:05] (2705.92s)
we always tell families to sign up for
[45:07] (2707.28s)
that consultation so that we can
[45:09] (2709.20s)
understand your situation and give you a
[45:11] (2711.20s)
better idea of what your family can get
[45:13] (2713.80s)
just because the income is the same so
[45:15] (2715.36s)
let's say you make 400 you know you you
[45:17] (2717.72s)
have a nextdoor neighbor they work at
[45:19] (2719.24s)
the same company in the same position
[45:20] (2720.72s)
and been there for exactly the same
[45:22] (2722.20s)
amount of time right and they also make
[45:25] (2725.00s)
400 yeah your income on paper is you
[45:28] (2728.20s)
know the same but your tax returns could
[45:30] (2730.68s)
look very different so that is something
[45:32] (2732.40s)
that we definitely want to take a look
[45:33] (2733.76s)
at to understand your situation a little
[45:36] (2736.76s)
better
[45:39] (2739.52s)
okay okay I have a second person that
[45:42] (2742.04s)
just emailed about can we meet with you
[45:44] (2744.52s)
tonight so again thank you I will email
[45:47] (2747.24s)
you right after this so that we can go
[45:48] (2748.80s)
ahead and figure out a time I'll also
[45:50] (2750.64s)
send you a zoom link so that we can talk
[45:52] (2752.96s)
about that as well
[45:58] (2758.12s)
all right I'm not seeing any more
[46:00] (2760.36s)
questions today right so hopefully you
[46:02] (2762.64s)
guys enjoyed kind of the the training we
[46:04] (2764.48s)
had today uh I might think about doing a
[46:06] (2766.36s)
little bit more combo trainings right
[46:07] (2767.88s)
but I will be kind of jumping on again
[46:09] (2769.44s)
like I said on April 24th we'll be
[46:11] (2771.48s)
having a little kind of talk about kind
[46:12] (2772.80s)
of what what we should be kind of
[46:14] (2774.32s)
working on at this current moment I'll
[46:16] (2776.20s)
also kind of debrief about what I
[46:17] (2777.72s)
learned at the Western Association um of
[46:21] (2781.32s)
college admissions counselors right so
[46:23] (2783.00s)
that you guys have that information as
[46:24] (2784.68s)
well right we aren't Gatekeepers to
[46:26] (2786.28s)
information we try to share everything
[46:28] (2788.12s)
that we can with you guys okay all right
[46:30] (2790.60s)
so everyone have a great night right um
[46:32] (2792.92s)
the sun is still out so go enjoy uh you
[46:35] (2795.12s)
know some vitamin D there right uh and
[46:37] (2797.12s)
if you have any questions for us reach
[46:38] (2798.40s)
out in the Discord if you're a coaching
[46:40] (2800.00s)
family or in Facebook right via
[46:42] (2802.44s)
messenger email whatever you guys can
[46:44] (2804.76s)
get a hold of us through go ahead and do
[46:46] (2806.56s)
that so we can answer your questions
[46:47] (2807.88s)
okay so I'll leave this up just so that
[46:50] (2810.00s)
people can kind of you know scan those
[46:51] (2811.24s)
QR codes and I hope to see you guys all
[46:53] (2813.84s)
again next week okay all right everyone
[46:55] (2815.44s)
have a good night bye-bye for
